ATP world number three Alexander Zverev will be unable to participate in Wimbledon this year due to injury, his brother Mischa revealed to the German press. This comes after Zverev was forced to retire from his Roland Garros semifinal match against Rafael Nadal after injuring his right ankle.

During the second set of the match, Zverev slumped to the ground after rolling his ankle. His medical team immediately rushed to the court to help the 25-year-old player as it became apparent that he was unable to walk without assistance. Prior to Zverev’s injury, there was very little separating the two players during this nailbiting encounter, with Nadal winning the first set 7-6 and the second set going into yet another tiebreaker.

Zverev underwent surgery on his right ankle on Tuesday. This comes after an in-depth examination in Germany revealed that all three of the lateral ligaments in the injured ankle were torn. “To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure all the ligaments heal properly, and to reclaim full stability in my ankle, surgery was the best choice. My rehab starts now and I’ll do everything to come back stronger than ever!”, Zverev wrote in an Instagram post.

Following his performance at Roland Garros, Zverev will receive a career-high ranking of 2nd place in the ATP World Rankings next week.

ATP 6th ranked Alexander Zverev has expressed disappointment in the behaviour of many of the younger tennis players who have been featured in this year’s edition of the US Open.

There have already been a number of incidents this year. These include Daniil Medvedev urging the crowd to boo him, Stefanos Tsitsipas calling the umpire a ‘weirdo’ during a disagreement, and the already infamous Nick Kyrgios claiming that the ATP was corrupt in reference to what he called “double standards” in their officiating.

Zverev expanded on his view, stating that ” There’s a lot of young guys that do things on the tennis court that maybe is not the best thing to do. I don’t want the next generation to be known for that.

I think a lot of the times Tsitsipas… with changing his shoes 15 times in a tournament, going to the bathroom, during a set,”.

Zverev, continued to elaborate on his point, explaining: “Let your tennis racquet talk for you kind of. You don’t need to do things to distract the opponent, try to win that way. Medvedev obviously a little bit now. But he’s winning. He’s in the quarterfinals. He’s playing Stan. It all doesn’t matter if you’re winning.”

Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber 2-1 to win the Hop Cup for the second in year in a row.

In a repeat of the 2018 finals, Federer won his individual match against Zverev 6-4, 6-2 to put Switzerland ahead. Germany’s Kerber defeated Bencic 6-4, 7-6 to level the game. In the mixed doubles, the Swiss held off the Germans 4-0, 1-4, 4-3 to lift Switzerland’s fourth title in the competition.

“I’m happy I’m feeling this good and playing as well as I am,” Federer said. “It’s good to finish on a singles performance like this. I’m a bit surprised that the matches have gone as well as they have.”

Switzerland nearly lost the finals after wasting a point to tie the game 3-3 in the deciding third set. Zverev hit the net while serving, giving Switzerland the victory.

For the 20-time Grand Slam winner, Saturday’s title was his third for Switzerland. He won it with Bencic last year and this year and had already won it in 2001 while playing with Martina Hingis.

The Hopman Cup will reportedly be replaced with an ATP event starting the next year, meaning Switzerland’s win could be the last.

World No.1 Novak Djokovic produced a robust performance on Wednesday night to overpower Germany’s Alexander Zverev and inch closer to the ATP semifinals in London.

Despite fighting the flu and having to blow his nose in between points, the 31-year-old produced a rock-solid performance to beat Zverev 6-4, 6-1. The Serbian saved two break points in the opening set and overpowered his opponent in the second set to make things easier for him.

“Unfortunately, today hasn’t been great in terms of that (the flu),” – the five-time champion said. “Somehow I managed to gather the strength when I needed it. I guess winning the first set really counts this year…you have mentally quite an edge.”

Zverev looked determined to win the game as he held off Djokovic’s powerful hits and served hard. But after drawing the game 4-4, his wear began to show. A few forced errors and the Serbian won the first set, demoralizing the German in the process.

Although he is already one step into the semis, a three straight sets win for Marin Cilic over American John Isner would lock him out of the competition. If Isner wins, the Serbian will advance to the semis for the eighth time in his career.
