The Washington Capitals superstar forward Alexander Ovechkin continues to write his name in the NHL history books. By scoring two goals in a 2-5 win over the Calgary Flames, Ovechkin became just the third player ever to have 19 consecutive seasons with at least 20 goals.

Ovechkin now has 21 goals in the 2023-24 NHL campaign and has added 31 assists for a total of 52 points in 64 games.

Besides Ovechkin, only Gordie Howe and Brendan Shanahan managed to have 19 straight 20-goal seasons. Howe actually had 22 seasons with at least 20 goals, from 1949-50 to 1970-71. However, Ovechkin is the only player in NHL history to start the streak in his first season in the league.

The two goals also got Ovechkin closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record. His goal tally in the NHL now stands at 843 goals, and he needs to score 52 more to jump over Gretzky.

“There’s not many things that hasn’t been said about him, but he keeps doing it, even at age 38. It’s fun to be a part of, fun to watch,” said Capitals’ Dylan Strome about Ovechkin.

Ovechkin himself focused on the importance of the win, their third straight, which moved the Capitals into a wild-card spot.

“We know it’s not going to be easy. We keep fighting, keep playing,” said Ovechkin. “We still can do it. We’re still in the battle. Every point counts.”

Alex Ovechkin hadn’t participated in a fight in the NHL since 2011, but the Capitals’ forward couldn’t resist the chance when challenged by young Carolina defender Andrei Svechnikov.

The Caps led the Hurricanes 2-0 in their opening round playoff series before Carolina thoroughly bested them on Monday.

Some of that frustration boiled over for Ovechkin, who knocked his Russian compatriot flat on the ground after a bit of jawing in the first period of the game.

The Capitals, a heavy favorite in the series, are still in control of the opening round matchup.

The biggest story of the game was probably the fight between the 33-year-old Ovechkin and the 19-year-old Svechnikov.

The Russian defender had to be carted off of the ice and taken to the hospital after his tussle with Ovechkin. His status for the rest of the series is unclear.

Carolina’s 5-0 win was their first NHL playoff victory since the 2009 season. Warren Foegele led the way for the Canes with two goals and an assist.

The series will resume on Thursday night in Raleigh.

When Vegas Gold Knights won Game 1 of 2018 Stanley Cup Finals over Washington Capitals on May 28, it looked like we are in for a nail-biting series that could go either way. Well, Capitals didn’t let that happen. They won the next four games and lifted the Stanley Cup trophy on Thursday night for the first time in the franchise’s history. It was also the first major sports championship for the city of Washington since Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1992.

“Right now I’m so happy for this group because I know how much misery they’ve gone through, our fan base,” – said Capitals coach Barry Trotz after the game. “I’ve been trying to change the narrative for a couple of years, and I’ve just so glad this group just got off the floor from last year, and they just said, you know what, it’s not going to happen anymore. Great job by everybody, they just got better and better, and just the resiliency that they’ve had to endure over the last how many years, and now they get it.”

This was also the first Stanley Cup for Alexander Ovechkin, who had to wait 13 years for this. Although regarded as one of the greatest ice-hockey players in the modern NHL, Ovechkin never managed to get over the hump; until now. Ovechkin had a tremendous postseason, being the leading scorer of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs with 15 goals. He also added 12 assists and deservingly named the Finals MVP.

“We did it,” – said Ovechkin. “That’s all that matters. Look at the smiles on my teammates. This is something you’ll never forget. This moment, I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I’m so happy. It’s unbelievable.“

Although they ended up on the losing end of the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals, Vegas Gold Knights know that they have shattered everyone’s wildest predictions for them in this season. Despite playing their inaugural season in NHL, Gold Knights advanced all the way to the end and should be excited about the franchise’s future.

“They deserve it,” – said Gold Knights general manager George McPhee. “They were much better than we were, and they were the better team. It’s just a hell of a team. Really a talented team, experienced team, gritty team, and they were really well coached.”
