Retired Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith is venturing to television after ending his pro career earlier this year. Smith signed a deal with ESPN to serve as an NFL analyst. He is expected to make appearances on multiple shows for the network, including SportsCenter, Monday Night Countdown, and Sunday NFL Countdown.

ESPN, who recently hired quarterback Robert Griffin III in a similar role, confirmed the news on Monday.

Throughout his NFL career, Smith has been very open and accessible to the media while building a close relationship with the reporters. This, alongside his unquestionable football IQ and knowledge about the game, should make the transition to his new role a rather easy one.

Alex Smith spent his last season as a pro with the Washington Football team, playing eight regular-season games in 2020. Smith impressively returned after being sidelined for more than a year with a life-threatening leg injury and threw for 1,582 yards and six touchdowns while helping Washington win the NFC East. He won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award at the end of the season.

Despite making a successful comeback, Smith was released by Washington early in the 2021 offseason. The 37-year-old star hinted at a possibility of looking for another job in the NFL at the time but eventually decided to retire.

Smith, who was the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, previously played for the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. He has three Pro Bowl nods.

The 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Alex Smith will have to find a new team next season after being released by the Washington Football Team on Friday.

Smith had two years left on his deal with Washington, but had no guaranteed money. The organization saved $14.6 million by moving on.

Smith was an unsung hero for Washington last season, leading the team to the NFC East title and a playoff spot. The 36-year-old veteran was reliable and often impressive under center despite not playing football for almost two years due to a life-threatening injury in 2018.

Still, it became obvious in recent weeks that the two sides were heading towards a breakup.

Smith wants to continue playing and believes he can still be a starter in this league. Washington, on the other hand, is focused on finding their quarterback of the future.

“I want to thank Alex for his contributions this past year,” said Washington head coach Ron Rivera. “He made such an impact on our young roster, and his leadership was one of the key factors in our late-season success and in making the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Everyone here in Washington wishes Alex and his family the best going forward and appreciates all that he gave to our organization.”

Alex Smith shouldn’t have a problem landing a job this offseason despite the injury concerns surrounding him. He is expected to be an interesting target for teams that need a proven backup or a bridge quarterback.

Washington, on the other hand, recently signed Taylor Heinicke on a new deal, and they also have Kyle Allen in the QB room. The team, however, is believed to be looking into other ways to find a starter in 2021.

The story of quarterback Alex Smith’s miraculous return to the football field might not be over yet. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Washington Football Team wants Smith to return to the team in 2021 if he decides to continue playing.

Despite being away from football for almost two years, Smith emerged as a reliable option at the QB position for Washington in recent weeks and appears to have convinced the organization there is still some fuel left in his tank.

Rapoport points out that Washington views Smith as a “bridge quarterback” for the next season as the franchise continues to look for their signal-caller of the future. The organization also appreciates his locker room presence and mentorship.

Alex Smith spent the previous two years out of NFL due to a gruesome leg injury that not only jeopardize his career but also put him in danger of losing the ability to walk. But the 37-year-old player luckily managed to recover in full and earned himself a spot on Washington’s roster for the 2020 NFL season.

Initially being the third QB on the depth chart, Smith managed to work his way to the starting position as second-year player Dwayne Haskins continued to struggle, and Kyle Allen was ruled out for the season due to an ankle injury. He produced well in the role, completing 68.2 percent of his passes while throwing for 918 yards and two TDs in four games (two starts).

The Washington Football Team routed the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, winning 41-16 and moving into first place in the NFC East.

The Football Team has now swept their season series with the Cowboys, beating them in both meetings. Their offense was led by a brilliant performance by rookie running back Antonio Gibson, who rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns.

The Cowboys got a less-than-stellar performance from their big-money running back Ezekiel Elliot, who fumbled the ball yet again and now has a whopping six fumbles on the season. Elliot only ran the ball 10 times for a miserable 32 yards from scrimmage.

The Football Team’s defense also had a great day, sacking Dallas quarterback Andy Dalton three times and getting a pick-six off him as well.

The Cowboys played poorly in every facet of the game and even had a fake punt attempt deep in their territory in the fourth quarter that was poorly executed and didn’t fool anyone.

With Gibson running wild, Washington quarterback Alex Smith didn’t need to do much but did put in a steady performance, completing 19 of 26 passes for 149 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Washington needs both the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles to lose this week in order to stay in first place in the division.

Almost two years after fracturing his leg, Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith has been cleared by the team’s medical staff to return to the field.

Smith had a grueling recovery and had to undergo a total of 17 surgeries since his November 2018 injury in which he suffered a spiral and compound fracture of his tibia and fibula. He also battled necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis that could have cost him both his leg and his life.

His story is one of unrivaled perseverance, and even if he never plays again, the fact that he has recovered and is healthy enough to practice with the team is amazing enough.

Smith was the Kansas City Chiefs’ no. 1 overall pick in 2005 and was traded to the Washington Football Team in January 2018. His next challenge is to see whether he can take the starting job this year from Dwayne Haskins Jr., the young quarterback that Washington picked in the first round of the 2019 draft to be the team’s future leader.

Washington’s new head coach Ron Riviera has commented, saying if Smith is healthy, he is going to have an opportunity to compete with Haskins Jr. and battle for the starting job.

It appears that Washington Football Team will have a reliable option on quarterback position in 2020 as veteran Alex Smith received medical clearance to resume football activities.

Smith was away from football since November 2018, when he suffered a leg fracture in a game against Houston Texans. The 36-year-old veteran was in a life-threatening situation at one point, and it was unclear whether he’ll be able to play again.

However, in a recent interview with ESPN, Smith said that the injury is now behind him and that he’s finally ready to return to football.

“Everyone was in agreement that my bone was in a really good place,” said Smith. “I had healed a lot. They said that given the combination of the rod and where I was with the healing process, I had zero limitations and could even resume some football activities.”

Still, Smith doesn’t expect to step on the field right away and acknowledges that the process just started for him.

“For me, all eyes are on practice,” he added. “That’s the next step. I have to go prove to myself and certainly to everybody else that I can go practice.”

Alex Smith joined Washington in 2018, in a trade from Kansas City Chiefs. In 10 games before the injury, he had 2,180 passing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Smith, who was San Francisco 49ers’ first overall pick in 2005, has a career completion percentage of 62.4 with 34,068 passing yards and 193 TDs. He is three times Pro Bowler.

Washington will hope that Smith cam return this year as they desperately need experience on the QB position. Their remaining options include second-year player Dwayne Haskins and offseason acquisition Kyle Allen.

Washington Redskins’ playoff hunt might have come to an end on Sunday. The team did not just lose the game against Houston Texans, but they have also lost their starting quarterback Alex Smith for the season. Redskins’ head coach Jay Gruden confirmed that Smith broke his leg in the game against Texans and that he underwent a surgery on Sunday night.

I know it was very painful for [Smith] and heartbreaking for a lot of people,” – said Gruden. “He’s a great guy and a hard worker and one of the key leaders on this football team. These things happen in pro football, unfortunately. You just hate to see them happen to a guy like Alex. But knowing the type of guy he is, I think he’ll bounce back.”

Before going down with an injury, Alex Smith was having a solid season, leading his team to six wins in nine games. He completed 62.5 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,180 yards and ten touchdowns.

Smith joined the Redskins in January after they sent cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick to Kansas City Chiefs in exchange.

Colt McCoy played the rest of the game against the Texans, but it is hard to see Washington Redskins stick with the 32-year-old, who hasn’t thrown a pass in NFL since 2015 before getting a chance on Sunday. Since they had only two quarterbacks on the roster, Redskins will now look to sign another QB in the coming days. According to NFL Insider Ian Rappaport, several veteran free agents will work out for the team, including EJ Manuel, Mark Sanchez, Josh Johnson, and Kellen Clemens.

The NFL offseason didn’t even start yet, and we have ourselves a first blockbuster trade. Kansas City Chiefs just traded their starting quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a third-round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller.

According to the reports, Smith, who has one year left on his deal, will sign a contract extension with the Redskins in the coming days. The contract will be for four-year and worth around $23.5 million per year. $71 million of that money will be guaranteed.

This trade works well for both teams. Chiefs already have Smith’s successor in Patrick Mahomes II, whom they drafted in 2017 NFL draft with the 10th overall pick. Although it is a small sample size, with his performance in the Week 17 against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes looked like he is the right man to fill the QB spot. He completed 22 of his 35 passes, throwing for 284 yards in a 27-24 win. They will also get a reliable cornerback in Fuller, who will almost certainly be a starter in the next season not to mention the $17 million in cap relief.

When it comes to Redskins, they decided to be the ones to make the first move, and secure their QB position. Current Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason once again after playing two years with a franchise tag. Redskins and Cousins failed to work out a long-term deal once again, and franchise-tagging the 29-year old veteran for the third time would be costly for the team since he would be owed $34.5 million. With Smith, they get a quarterback with playoff experience and similar production, but for less money.

Cousins, on the other hand, will now be one of the most desirable free agents in the offseason, with Denver Broncos being a strong suitor.
