Retired Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith is venturing to television after ending his pro career earlier this year. Smith signed a deal with ESPN to serve as an NFL analyst. He is expected to make appearances on multiple shows for the network, including SportsCenter, Monday Night Countdown, and Sunday NFL Countdown.

ESPN, who recently hired quarterback Robert Griffin III in a similar role, confirmed the news on Monday.

Throughout his NFL career, Smith has been very open and accessible to the media while building a close relationship with the reporters. This, alongside his unquestionable football IQ and knowledge about the game, should make the transition to his new role a rather easy one.

Alex Smith spent his last season as a pro with the Washington Football team, playing eight regular-season games in 2020. Smith impressively returned after being sidelined for more than a year with a life-threatening leg injury and threw for 1,582 yards and six touchdowns while helping Washington win the NFC East. He won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award at the end of the season.

Despite making a successful comeback, Smith was released by Washington early in the 2021 offseason. The 37-year-old star hinted at a possibility of looking for another job in the NFL at the time but eventually decided to retire.

Smith, who was the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, previously played for the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. He has three Pro Bowl nods.

The 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Alex Smith will have to find a new team next season after being released by the Washington Football Team on Friday.

Smith had two years left on his deal with Washington, but had no guaranteed money. The organization saved $14.6 million by moving on.

Smith was an unsung hero for Washington last season, leading the team to the NFC East title and a playoff spot. The 36-year-old veteran was reliable and often impressive under center despite not playing football for almost two years due to a life-threatening injury in 2018.

Still, it became obvious in recent weeks that the two sides were heading towards a breakup.

Smith wants to continue playing and believes he can still be a starter in this league. Washington, on the other hand, is focused on finding their quarterback of the future.

“I want to thank Alex for his contributions this past year,” said Washington head coach Ron Rivera. “He made such an impact on our young roster, and his leadership was one of the key factors in our late-season success and in making the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Everyone here in Washington wishes Alex and his family the best going forward and appreciates all that he gave to our organization.”

Alex Smith shouldn’t have a problem landing a job this offseason despite the injury concerns surrounding him. He is expected to be an interesting target for teams that need a proven backup or a bridge quarterback.

Washington, on the other hand, recently signed Taylor Heinicke on a new deal, and they also have Kyle Allen in the QB room. The team, however, is believed to be looking into other ways to find a starter in 2021.

The story of quarterback Alex Smith’s miraculous return to the football field might not be over yet. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Washington Football Team wants Smith to return to the team in 2021 if he decides to continue playing.

Despite being away from football for almost two years, Smith emerged as a reliable option at the QB position for Washington in recent weeks and appears to have convinced the organization there is still some fuel left in his tank.

Rapoport points out that Washington views Smith as a “bridge quarterback” for the next season as the franchise continues to look for their signal-caller of the future. The organization also appreciates his locker room presence and mentorship.

Alex Smith spent the previous two years out of NFL due to a gruesome leg injury that not only jeopardize his career but also put him in danger of losing the ability to walk. But the 37-year-old player luckily managed to recover in full and earned himself a spot on Washington’s roster for the 2020 NFL season.

Initially being the third QB on the depth chart, Smith managed to work his way to the starting position as second-year player Dwayne Haskins continued to struggle, and Kyle Allen was ruled out for the season due to an ankle injury. He produced well in the role, completing 68.2 percent of his passes while throwing for 918 yards and two TDs in four games (two starts).
