After the departure of Sebastian Giovinco and Victor Vasquez, it looked like Toronto FC might have trouble staying competitive in the 2019 MLS season. This, however, took another turn on Sunday since the team announced that they have signed Genk’s midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo.

Pozuelo, who’s considered one of the best players in Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League, will join his new club as a Designated Player on March 18 in a transfer worth $10 million including incentives.

Rumors about Toronto FC’s interest for Alejandro Pozuelo started circling back in early January when Belgian media reported that the Canadian club enquired about the 27-year-old’s services. The report said that Toronto offered $10 million, but that Genk wanted more, which put the transfer in jeopardy. Belgian side obviously was eager to make a sale at the end, and ended up taking the original offer.

“Alejandro is an excellent player who has the ability to both create and score goals,” – said Toronto FC General Manager Ali Curtis in a statement.  “He is the best player on the best team in Belgium’s top division. Obviously, and for so many reasons, we would like him to join us now, but we look forward to his arrival on March 18.”

“We are very excited for the 2019 season, and adding another important piece to a group that already has a lot of quality only makes us stronger.” – he added.

Pozuelo started his career with La Liga side Betis, before embarking on stints with Swansea City and Rayo Vallecano. He joined Genk in 2015 and since then played 135 games for the club, managing to score 18 goals.

After Toronto FC parted ways with club legend Sebastian Giovinco, who ended up joining Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal last month, the team aggressively started searching for his replacement. And while it looked like U.S. international Terrence Boyd is the most probable candidate for that, another name came into play. According to MLS soccer’s Sam Stejskal, Toronto is now trying to acquire Spanish attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo from Genk.

Stejskal reports that Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant said that “a team from Canada” made an official offer for Pozuelo and that Genk asks at least $10 million for the services of the 27-year-old Spaniard.

Alejandro Pozuelo started his professional career in native Spain with Betis, where he played until 2013. After failing to get meaningful minutes in La Liga, he had stints with Swansea City and Rayo Vallecano, before joining Genk in 2015. Pozuelo played a total of 135 games in Belgium in all competitions and managed to score 18 goals.

While Alejandro Pozuelo certainly fits the type of player Toronto FC is currently looking for, this doesn’t mean that the team isn’t looking at other options as well. Toronto would like to acquire the Third Designated Player before the CONCACAF Champions League, and if negotiations with Genk turn out to be a hard bargain, they could easily turn to other targets.
