Veteran pass rusher Aldon Smith won’t return to the Dallas Cowboys for the 2021 NFL season after the organization opted against offering him a new deal. The Cowboys reportedly informed Smith about their decision earlier this week.

The news comes as a surprise, especially since the Cowboys rejected several trade proposals for Smith ahead of the last season’s deadline. Also, the 31-year-old Smith was among the team’s most productive players on defense in 2020, starting all 16 games and totaling 48 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 14 QB hits, and a defensive touchdown.

Reportedly, Dallas changed their mind about Smith after picking up veteran Tarell Basham in the free agency. The organization is also looking to give a bigger role to 2015’s second-round pick Randy Gregory, which would be harder to do if Smith remained on the team.

Aldon Smith, who was the No.7 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, previously played with San Francisco 49ers and the Raiders. After serving several suspensions early in his career, Smith was suspended indefinitely by the NFL in 2015 and missed four seasons before returning last year.

Smith has 228 career tackles to go with 52.5 sacks, 103 QB hits, and six forced fumbles. He has one Pro Bowl nod and a First-Team All-Pro selection, both from 2012.

Dallas Cowboys have made a purge in their defense recently, releasing or trading several veterans including Everson Griffin and Dontari Poe. But despite this fire sale, it appears there are some players that Dallas doesn’t want to let go.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo, multiple teams have approached Cowboys to inquire about defensive end Aldon Smith and received a negative answer. Seattle Seahawks even made an offer for Smith, but Dallas wasn’t interested in dealing.

Smith, who’s 31 years old, was out of the league since 2015 and signed by Cowboys to a one-year deal in the offseason. It proved to be a wise decision by the franchise considering that he was one of the rare bright spots in their struggling defense in 2020.

Smith leads the team with 4.0 sacks while also having 32 tackles, eight QB hits, and two pass deflections. He also ranks No.8 among all edge defenders in terms of pass-rush productivity.

It isn’t hard to see why Dallas Cowboys want to keep Aldon Smith around. Quality pass rushers are hard to come by, and Dallas appears to have struck gold by finding one on the cheap with Smith.

However, there is also a chance that other teams just didn’t make a good enough offer to convince the Cowboys to sell. We’ll see if this might change soon.

Dallas Cowboys’ defensive end Aldon Smith hasn’t played in the NFL since 2015, but it appears that the absence from the game didn’t affect his abilities all that much. At least according to the Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy had a chat with reporters on Thursday and took the time to share his thoughts about Smith’s performances so far in the training camp.

“I would say that if you walked away from practice you’d say ‘Hey, who the hell was No. 58?'” said McCarthy. “That’s my thought when we walked out on the field for the first time. He looks good. I think his process back has been not a gradual one, but he’s hitting all the targets. I’ve very, very happy with where Aldon is right now.“

Drafted No.7 by San Francisco 49ers in 2011, Smith had an impressive start to his NFL career, collecting 33.5 sacks in his first two seasons. He also managed to collect a Pro Bowl appearance and First-team All-Pro selections in his sophomore year.

However, Smith’s later career was marked with multiple suspensions and which limited him to 27 games in the next three years and got him out of the league by 2016.

Smith inked a one-year contract with Dallas in April, hoping to get his career back on track. So far, things look good, and he could potentially play a big part in Cowboy’s revamped defense if he keeps his focus. McCarthy certainly hopes that will be the case.

“Aldon is off to a very good start,” McCarthy added. “He’s impressive. Still very impressive.”

Dallas Cowboys are getting creative in an attempt to add some pass rush to their defense. According to reports, Cowboys have signed outside linebacker Aldon Smith, who last played in the league in 2015.

Smith was out of the league for the past four years as a result of his troubling off-the-field behavior. He received an initial one-year suspension by NFL in 2015, but failed to convince the league to grant him reinstatement after.

Cowboys hope that the league will be more generous this time, which is why they were comfortable giving Smith a one-year, $4 million deal.

The 30-year-old himself confirmed the deal on social media, writing: “Life is good. I’m thankful. I’m blessed. I’m a Cowboy.”

Aldon Smith entered the league in 2011 as the 7th overall pick by San Francisco 49ers. He immediately made an impact in his rookie season, recording 14.0 sacks despite not making a single start. Smith followed that up with a breakthrough sophomore year, getting 19.5 sacks and earning First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

Smith’s career went downhill from here, as various violations of the NFL’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies caused him to miss 18 games in the next three years. He played his last season with Oakland Raiders, getting 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks in nine games.
