Houston Dynamo forward Alberth Elis is close to making his dreams of playing in Europe come true. According to multiple reports, Elis is close to finalizing a move to Portuguese side Boavista.

Reportedly, Boavista agreed to pay between $7 million and $9 million to Houston, while Elis is expected to ink a three-year deal once he undergoes his physical.

If everything checks out, this would be Boavista’s second purchase from MLS in a matter of weeks, as they recently also acquire USMNT defender Reggie Cannon from FC Dallas.

Alberth Elis joined Houston Dynamo back in 2018 and has been a prominent figure in the team’s starting lineup since. He scored 34 goals and dished 27 assists during his time in Houston while helping Dynamo to win the US Open Cup trophy. Elis also has one All-Star appearance to show for.

Despite his success with Dynamo, Elis was vocal about wanting to take his talents to Europe. The 24-year-old forward previously rejected a contract extension with MLS, so it was only a matter of time before he moves on.

According to reports, Houston reacted swiftly and already identified Argentine forward Mateo Bajamich and Honduras forward Darixon Vuelto as replacements. The club is expected to make a move for the duo once Elis’ transfer is finalized.

Transfer rumors of Houston Dynamo’s Alberth Elis have been circulating for a while now and it seems like during this offseason, Dynamo may finally lose their star forward. Elis’ contract expires at the end of 2020 and in a recent interview with Honduran Radio America, Elis said that he “dreams” of playing in Europe and trying to make the move.

“For me it is a dream to be able to go to Europe and I think this is the chance,” said Elis. “This is the opportunity and I think I will make the decision in the end of trying to make the jump. God first, a good opportunity will come to try to make the leap.”

Since joining the Dynamo in 2017, Elis has been a huge part of the team, but he’s interested in taking his skills and competing against the best in the world.

He’s currently in the last year of his contract and Dynamo hasn’t been successful in getting him to sign an extension, even though they’ve given him some amazing offers. Elis claims that the club made him the highest contract offer in its history.

“Houston Dynamo has made offers to me as well. They made me an offer a few months ago, a very good one,” he added.

Elis’ early career was in his native Honduras and Mexico with Olimpia and C.F. Monterrey. He joined the Houston Dynamo from Monterrey on loan in 2017 and made a huge name for himself in MLS, scoring 10 goals and four assists in 26 games.

In 2018, Dynamo acquired Elis permanently and he earned his All-Star appearance and led the team to the U.S. Open Cup title. In total, he played 82 games with the club and had 30 goals and 24 assists.
