The St. Louis Cardinals’ legendary slugger Albert Pujols didn’t take long to return to baseball after retiring at the end of the 2022 season. The MLB announced on Monday that Pujols will be joining the league office, where he’ll serve in the role of a Special Assistant to Commissioner Rob Manfred.

But this won’t be all. Pujols will also venture into broadcasting, working on MLB Network as an analyst.

In his role as an assistant to Commissioner, Pujols will work with MLB on a number of subjects. However, his focus is expected to be on “player relations and issues” regarding his home country of the Dominican Republic.

Regarding his MLB Network analyst duties, Pujols will contribute to shows like “MLB Central” and “MLB Tonight.” He will also assume on-air duties, including the coverage of the Cubs–Cardinals series in London later this month.

“I couldn’t be more excited for this next chapter of my career,” Pujols said in a statement. “Commissioner Manfred and I share the same passion for growing the game in the Dominican Republic, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to join the MLB Network family. I’ve been a huge fan since the very beginning and can’t wait to get started.”

Albert Pujols spent 22 years in the majors, suiting up for the Cardinals, the Los Angeles Angels, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a three-time NL MVP and two-time World Series Champion with the Cardinals while earning 11 All-Star nods.

Albert Pujols tied Alex Rodriguez with his 2,086th career run batted in during his team’s Wednesday night loss to the San Francisco Giants, tying him for second place on the all-time RBI list in MLB history.

Pujols hit an RBI single in the 6th inning off of Giants pitcher Andrew Suarez, which drove in teammate Anthony Rendon and moved him into a deadlock with Rodriguez.

The run batted in was ultimately wasted by the Angels, who dropped a 7-2 and saw their record fall to a putrid 8-17 mark.

“The Machine,” who has been one of the league’s most-feared hitters for his nearly two-decade-long career, now only trails all-time home run king Hank Aaron for 1st place in the record books. With one year left on the 10-year, $240 million contract that Pujols before the 2012 season, it appears unlikely that he will reach the Braves legend before the end of his career.

Pujols has been hampered by leg injuries and declining production over the past few years, as he has been a below-average hitter and player since 2017.

The Dominican slugger is batting only .209 with 3 home runs so far this season.

Next on the record watch list for Pujols is his next home run, which will be the 660th of his distinguished career and will tie him with Willie Mays for 5th on the all-time list.

With a single into right field that scored Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols passed yet another milestone in his historic baseball career. He passed fellow Dominican born Adrian Beltre to become the all-time hits leader for foreign-born players.

Career hit no. 3,167 now places him 15th on the all-time hit list. While Pujols isn’t the threat he was when he played with the Cardinals, the milestones keep piling up for the 39-year-old. This year he became only the third member of the 2,000 RBI club and became the first player in history with 650 homers and 650 doubles.

With foreign-born players such as Ichiro and Roberto Clemente who were known for their hits and getting on base, the fact that Pujols is now the all-time leader is a testament to how good he has been for so long. In addition to hits, he is also the all-time foreign-born leader in homers (651), doubles (653), runs (1,815), and RBI’s (2,052).

Although his numbers have declined since his prime, his humility hasn’t. Pujols still refuses to pay too much attention to his personal milestones and instead focuses on getting the Angels to a much-needed playoff appearance.

Pujols is only 9 home runs away from moving into 5th all-time and is close to passing Cal Ripken Jr. (3,184) for 14th in the hits category. It is just a matter of how many more productive seasons Pujols can put up as to where the future Hall of Famer will stand on the all-time leaderboard when he eventually does retire.
