Indianapolis Colts might make a change at the kicker position after all, although it won’t be because they’ve finally lost confidence in struggling Adam Vinatieri. The veteran kicker was in limited practice this week due to a knee injury which might prevent him to play again this season.

Vinatieri told reporters on Thursday that he currently doesn’t know when he might be back on the field, or whether he’ll return at all in 2019.

“I don’t have an answer,” – said Vinatieri. “I don’t know. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow and the next day and the next day.”

“Felt [pain] a little bit last week and through the game [against Tennessee on Sunday],.” – he explained. “Just a little more sharp than what it was before.”

Vinatieri is currently awaiting MRI results, after which he will have a meeting with Indianapolis’ general manager Chris Ballard and the team’s medical staff in order to see whether he’ll be placed on the injured reserve list.

Indianapolis already started preparing for life after Vinatieri, claiming Chase McLaughlin off waivers on Thursday. McLaughlin split the time between Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers this season.

Adam Vinatieri has been a reliable solution at kicker position for Indianapolis Colts in more than a decade, but his performance took a significant hit in 2019. This season, Vinatieri converted just 17-of-25 field goals, while making only five FGs out of 12 attempts that were 40+ yards long. He was also inconsistent on extra points, making 22 out of 28 attempted.

Officially, Indianapolis Colts are not concerned about kicker Adam Vinatieri’s struggles in 2019. But, unofficially, the team is already looking for a backup plan if they continue.

Colts organized a workout on Tuesday during which they gathered intel on kickers Mike Nugent, Nick Rose, Elliott Fry, and Greg Joseph. The team did not offer a contract to anyone at the moment, but they reportedly want to be ready if they decide to make a change at the position.

Indianapolis is still publicly sticking with Vinatieri, with the team’s head coach Frank Reich saying after the workout that he is the team’s kicker moving forward.

“Adam’s our kicker,” – Reich told reporters. “(General manager) Chris (Ballard) and I have talked about the situation. Obviously there have been other kickers in here. … When you take a look, we believe Adam is the answer.”

Adam Vinatieri has been far from his usual form in 2019, making some big misses that heavily influenced the outcome of Colts’ games. Vinatieri opened the season by missing two field goals and one extra point against Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 and followed that up two PAT misses in Week 2.

Vinatieri reportedly considered retirement after this, but ended up changing his mind. Still, the 46-year-old continued to struggle with efficiency and contributed to at least two losses with his misses. He is now 14-of-19 on FGs while also failing to convert six extra points.

Vinatieri has been with Indianapolis since 2005, making one Pro Bowl appearance and helping the team to win Super Bowl  XLI.

Even at the age of 46, Indianapolis Colts’ kicker Adam Vinatieri isn’t ready to say goodbye to football. Instead, Vinatieri will sign a new deal with the Colts’ and return for his 24th NFL season in 2019, team’s general manager Chris Ballard confirmed on Friday.

The terms of Vinatieri’s deal have not been made public, but according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, the two sides agreed to a one-year contract.

The news was later confirmed on the Colts’ official social media.

Adam Vinatieri had a solid season in 2018, making 23 field goals out of 27 attempted, with the longest one being 54 yards, while making 44 of 47 extra points. He also finished the year having broken two major records. In Week 4, Vinatieri made his 566th career FG, which meant he surpassed Morten Andersen, who held the previous mark with 565. Then in Week 8, he earned 2,547 points and surpassed Andersen and his previous record of 2,544 career points.

With these and several other NFL records under his belt, Adam Vinatieri now only can only chase longevity goals. Since he will be 47 towards the end of the 2019 season, he can join George Blanda and Morten Andersen as the third player to score at that age. Also, Vinatieri can try to become the oldest player to play in an NFL game, but he would then have to play until the start of 2021 season in order to pass Blanda who was 48 years, 109 days old when he played his last professional game.

Adam Vinatieri started his football career in NFL Europe, before joining the New England Patriots in 1996. After nine years with the Pats, he signed with the Colts in 2005 and was team’s starting kicker ever since. Vinatieri’s career accomplishments include four Super Bowl rings, three Pro Bowl selections, and three First-team All-Pro honors.
