It appears that Adam Shaheen showed enough promise in his six games with the Miami Dolphins to warrant a new deal. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Dolphins inked Shaheen to a two-year extension.

Shaheen, who was set to become a free agent after this season, will get a contract worth $7.85 million. Schefter reports that the deal includes $3.2 million in guarantees.

The 26-year-old tight end has been performing well for the Dolphins as the season progressed, managing to catch touchdowns in each of the past two games he played. He was especially prolific in the Week 6 game against New York Jets when he had 51 receiving yards on three catches.

Adam Shaheen was a relatively unknown prospect entering the 2017 NFL draft out of Ashland University. Still, he was impressive enough at the combine to convince Chicago Bears to spend a second-round pick on him.

Shaheen had a solid rookie season with the Bears, finishing 2017 with three touchdowns and 127 yards receiving. He entered his sophomore year as Chicago’s starting TE, but injuries prevented him from using the opportunity in full. The injury struggles continued next season, prompting the Bears to trade him to Miami for a conditional seventh-rounder.

He proved to be a good pickup for the Dolphins, being reliable in the blocking game while also starting to unlock his pass-catching potential. If Shaheen can continue his development, Miami won’t have to worry about their depth on the position for years to come.

Chicago Bears continue to trim their tight ends corps following last week’s release of veteran Ben Braunecker. The team now also parted ways with Adam Shaheen, trading 2017’s second-round pick to Miami Dolphins over the weekend.

Bears will get a 2021 seventh-rounder in exchange for Shaheen, but if certain conditions are met, the pick could turn into a sixth-round selection.

Shaheen entered the league with a big promise but never managed to get his career off the ground during his three years in Chicago. He played 27 games (13 starts) and only has 26 receptions for 249 yards and four touchdowns to show for.

Dolphins probably view Adam Shaheen as a low-risk investment that could potentially pay off big time considering he had 129 receptions for 1,755 yards and 26 touchdowns during three years on college. The 25-year-old tight end is expected to compete with Durham Smythe and Michael Roberts for a backup tight end spot. Dolphins’ starter on the position will be Mike Gesicki.

Bears now have seven tight ends on the roster. The list includes veteran offseason acquisitions Jimmy Graham and Demetrius Harris and 2020’s second-round draft pick Cole Kmet, who will most likely be at the top of the chart when the season kicks off.
