The New York Rangers have locked their talented defenseman Adam Fox to a new seven-year extension. The deal, reportedly worth $66.5 million, will keep the reigning Norris Trophy winner with the franchise through the 2028-29 NHL season.

Fox is currently in the last year of his entry-level deal that pays him $925K in 2021-22. In nine games he played this season, the 23-year-old contributed two goals and seven assists for a total of nine points.

“I wanted to be a New York Ranger, and now that I’m here—and here for a long time—it’s a huge honor for me. There’s no place I’d rather be,” Fox said via NHL.com after the extension was made official.

Adam Fox was selected 66th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames but ended up having a rocky road to NHL. The Flames traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2018, and he ended up being moved again to the Ranger one year later. It was only in New York that he received a chance to make his debut in the league during the 2019-20 season.

Believing in Fox paid off for the Rangers as he immediately made a big impact in his rookie year with 42 points. He followed that up with a 47-point campaign last season that saw him being recognized as the league’s best defenseman and picking up First All-Star Team selection.

“In just over two seasons, Adam has consistently shown why he is a cornerstone for our organization and one of the best players in the NHL,” Rangers general manager Chris Drury said. “It has been a privilege for us, and our fans, to watch Adam showcase his ability on a nightly basis, and we are glad to have that opportunity for seven more years.”

New York Rangers are wasting no time in strengthening their squad for the next NHL season. The Rangers announced on Thursday that they have signed Harvard’s defenseman Adam Fox on an entry-level contract.

Rangers managed to get Fox, who was 66th overall pick in 2016, in a trade with Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday by sending a second-round pick in this year and a conditional third-round choice in 2020 in exchange.

“This is a player that not only did we watch for the (2016) draft and for the last couple years since the draft, but now he looks like a player who’s ready to come out and be a pro and push to make our team,” – said NY Rangers’ general manager Jeff Gorton. “The biggest thing is the skill. We’re trying, as we move this thing forward and rebuild the team, we’re looking at players that can make a difference, and this guy has high-end skill. He can really move a puck, his power-play ability is really good, he can run a power play, he has always played well in big games.”

Adam Fox will enter the NHL after a successful 2018-19 season with Harvard University in which he contributed with nine goals and 39 assists. Fox was also a part of United States’ national team on 2018 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship where he took part in winning the bronze medal.

It’s definitely a pretty special opportunity,” – said Fox after inking a deal with the Rangers. “Having been to enough games in the crowd and then being able to play on the ice – it’s always special. Hopefully, I’ll be fortunate enough to put on a Rangers jersey and play on that ice.”
