South African cricket coach Otis Gibson has revealed that the retirement of AB De Villiers came as a shock to him.

De Villiers shockingly announced last week that he would be retiring from all forms of international cricket with the World Cup just a year away. He will continue to play franchise and T20 cricket.

During his 14-year international career, De Villiers established himself as one of the best South African batsman and fielders of the modern era as well as one of the most entertaining batsmen of the modern era.

Gibson has since revealed that he had a conversation with De Villiers a day before the announcement was made, but was unable to change the mind of the 34-year-old.

“He called me the morning before he made the announcement,” said Gibson.“We had a long conversation about whether he was making the right decision.”

Gibson said De Villiers’ decision had been a shock to him. “He is one of the best players in the world. He could have made a huge difference in the World Cup.”

South African superstar AB De Villiers announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from all forms of international cricket.

“I have decided to retire from all international cricket with immediate effect,” – he said on Wednesday. “After 114 Test matches, 228 ODIs, and 78 T20 Internationals, it is time for others to take over. I have had my turn, and to be honest, I am tired.

“This is a tough decision. I have thought long and hard about it and I’d like to retire while still playing decent cricket. After the fantastic series wins against India and Australia, now feels like the right time to step aside.”

De Villiers is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of this generation having played 114 tests, 228 ODI’S and 78 tests for South Africa with an average of 54.17.

De Villiers made his debut in the format in December 2004 at Port Elizabeth, scoring 28 and 14 while opening the batting with his former captain Smith, in a seven-wicket loss to England.
