The massive success story of New York Red Bulls and USMNT defender Aaron Long might soon get another unexpected chapter. According to a report from FS1 analyst Brian Dunseth, Long has sparked interest from several European clubs in the past weeks.

Dunseth reported that English Premier League clubs have been especially keen on adding Long, with ESPN confirming that an unnamed team already sent a second offer for the reigning MLS Defender of the Year.

Long made 10 MLS appearances this season, scoring one goal in the process. He was also part of USMNT’s Gold Cup roster and ended up being named into Best XI of the tournament.

Before he was one of the biggest U.S. soccer stars, Aaron Long struggled to break into MLS. Both Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders passed on him before he landed a contract with New York Red Bulls reserve team in USL Championship in 2016. After a standout season with reserves, Long received an opportunity to play with the first team and never looked back.

Long played a total of 74 matches with Red Bulls, scoring six goals. He also made nine appearances with USMNT, scoring two goals in the process.

United States international defender Aaron Long is staying with New York Red Bulls for years to come. Long, who is the reigning MLS Defender of the Year, signed a new multi-year contract with the team on Monday. The team signed him to a deal using Targeted Allocation Money.

Red Bulls confirmed the news on their social media, sharing a video of Long’s highlights from 2018 MLS season.

“We are very excited to complete this signing and solidify Aaron’s future with our club” – said Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett. “Aaron has been key to our success as a team the last two seasons, and his personal achievements and recognitions speak for themselves. This signing is great news for our club and is also a prime example of our philosophy on player development.”

Aaron Long was part of New York Red Bulls’ defense that allowed just 33 goals in 34 regular season games. He also provided two goals and three assists in the same period, helping his team to league-high 71 points and the first seed in Eastern Conference.

“Aaron has been a major part of our team’s success over the last two seasons,” – said the team’s head coach Chris Armas. “He solidified our back line in 2017 and helped us become the best defense in the league in 2018. Aaron has also grown into a leader within our group and has earned the respect of everyone here.”

After spending most of his early career with teams from low-tier leagues, Long joined the Red Bulls for 2017 season. He immediately established himself as an integral part of the team’s back four, playing 31 games in the regular season and contributing one goal. This prompted USMNT interim head coach Dave Sarachan to hand him his first senior call-up in January 2018.

“This club gave me the opportunity I always wanted, and I will be forever grateful for that,” – said Long after inking the deal. “These coaches believed in me and allowed me to blossom into the player I am today. I will do everything I can to get silverware for this club.”

Major League Soccer continues to hand out awards to players who performed the best during the regular season. The league announced that New York Red Bulls’ center back Aaron Long is the winner of the 2018 MLS Defender of the Year Award after helping his team allow a league-low 33 goals. The 26-year-old also contributed three goals and two assists in 34 matches played.

Long received 26.52 percent of the votes to win the award, with Seattle Sounders’ Chad Marshall coming second with 20.93 percent of the votes.

It means a lot,” – said Long according to Red Bulls’ website. “It is judging your body of work for the full season. It shows that I am on the right path, helping my team, doing what I can to help the team win.”

Aaron Long started his MLS career with the Portland Timbers in January 2014 but was released after spending five months with the club. He then signed with the Seattle Sounders, but he ended up being also released without making a single appearance.

After stints in United Soccer League with Seattle Sounders FC 2 and New York Red Bulls II, Long finally received a chance to play in MLS in 2016 by signing with Red Bulls’ first team. He took the most out of his chance and is now considered to be one of the best defenders in the nation.
