The Green Bay Packers are still waiting for their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers to make a decision about his future. But in the meantime, the franchise is working on keeping other franchise cornerstones on Lambeau Field.

According to multiple reports, the Packers have agreed to a reworked contract with Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones, ensuring their backfield remains intact for next season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Jones agreed on an $11 million salary in 2023, with $8.52 million out of that number coming as a signing bonus.

As Schefter points out, Jones was in danger of being a cap casualty this offseason. He signed a four-year, $48 million contract ahead of the 2021 campaign but was carrying an unsustainable $20 million cap hit for 2023. By reworking his deal, the Packers now managed to get $11.8 million in cap savings.

Jones had one of his best seasons as a pro in 2022. He rushed for a career-high 1,121 yards while scoring two touchdowns on the ground. He also added a career-high 59 catches for 395 and five TDs.

The Packers are reportedly not done with salary cap gymnastics. They are also expected to rework the contracts of several other players in the upcoming weeks, including starting left tackle David Bakhtiari.

The Green Bay Packers successfully bounced back from an embarrassing 3-38 loss to the New Orleans Saints in the season opener. This came at the expense of their division rivals the Detroit Lions, whom the Packers beat 35-17 at Lambeau Field on Monday night.

The first half saw an even game that Detroit seemingly controlled and managed to head to the locker room with a 14-17 first-half lead. But the Packers entered the second period with a resilience that the Lions simply couldn’t keep up with.

Green Bay scored a touchdown on the first possession of the second half and then followed that up with two more touchdowns on consecutive possessions. Detroit, on the other hand, didn’t have an idea on offense and turned the ball over four times, including two times on downs.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers looked like the reigning MVP, unlike Week 1, throwing for 255 yards and four touchdowns. Among his highlights of the night was a 50-yard throw to Davante Adams that bailed Green Bay from a tough 3rd & 12 and set up a later touchdown.

“I think that there’s, even more now than when I started playing, there’s so many overreactions that happen on a week-to-week basis,” Rodgers said after the game. “So it’s nice to come out and have a good performance and get the trolls off our back for at least a week.”

Green Bay Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones had a huge night as well, catching three out of four TD passes that Rodgers threw on Monday night. Jones also added one rushing touchdown and finished with 115 yards from scrimmage.

Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones will run it back with the Green Bay Packers. Jones’ agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN on Sunday that his client is returning to Green Bay in 2021 on a new four-year deal.

Jones, who was set to be the most prominent RB on the free agency market, will reportedly earn $48 million in the next four seasons. This includes a $13 million signing bonus.

The 26-year-old star also confirmed the news on his social media.

According to Rosenhaus, he expected Jones to get even bigger offers in the free agency, but the player wanted to remain with the Packers.

Jones, who was Green Bay’s fifth-round pick in 2017, emerged as the team’s primary back in the past two years. He posted back-to-back 1,000+ rushing seasons and led the NFL with 19 rushing touchdowns in 2019 while also emerging as a weapon in the passing game.

The Packers and Aaron Jones were engaged in negotiations since early 2020 but reportedly struggled to agree on guaranteed money that would be included in the contract.

Green Bay earlier passed on the opportunity to franchise-tag Jones for a modest $8 million as they wanted to continue pursuing a long-term deal. It ended up paying off, and they now have their lead back locked for the future.

Green Bay will now have to figure out the rest of their backfield after extending Jones. They have last year’s second-round pick AJ Dillon on board but will most likely add a few more complementary players as veteran Jamaal Williams is set to leave in free agency.

The Green Bay Packers will have to make many tough decisions this offseason and chances are that their first order of business will be determining Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones’ future with the franchise.

Jones is set to become a free agent in March after he and the Packers couldn’t come to an agreement about a new deal. Previous reports indicated that the organization is already set to let the player walk away, but recent comments from Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst indicate otherwise.

Speaking with Green Bay Press-Gazette on Monday, Gutekunst explained that the franchise would “love” to have the 26-year-old star back for the 2021 NFL season and beyond.

“We would love to have Aaron back,” said Gutekunst. “I think he’s such an important part of our offense this year, he’s a dynamic player. He’s absolutely everything we want in a professional football player. So we’d certainly like to bring him back.”

The Packers have several ways to make this happen. They can offer Aaron Jones a new deal before he hits the free-agent market and make sure no team can lure him away. They can also franchise tag him, which would buy them more time to work out a new contract.

Still, none of this seems likely. Jones reportedly has an issue with guaranteed money that he would get with his new contract, while Green Bay isn’t ready to make changes there.

Jones had career-high 1,104 rushing yards in 2020 while adding nine touchdowns. He also 47 passed for 355 yards and two scores.

Despite possibly entering the 2020 NFL season without a new deal, Green Bay Packers’ standout back Aaron Jones still hopes he can have a future with the franchise.

According to Jones, his representatives and Packers’ front office are still talking, and he is trying not to let the process bother him or take his focus from football.

“I’m just sitting back, waiting until it’s done, I guess,” said Jones during an appearance on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football on Tuesday. “My agent and them are taking care of it. I’m gonna continue to play football, and when it’s time to sign the deal, it’ll be time. But I’m just going to focus on football.”

Aaron Jones currently has one year left on his deal, which will pay him $2.133 million in 2020. The Packers showed interest in keeping him past this season, but it is unclear how much they are willing to spend in order to make that happen. A strong indicator that Green Bay isn’t prepared to go overboard for Jones is drafting Boston’s A.J. Dillon in the second round of this year’s draft.

Jones is coming off a breakthrough season which saw him run for 1,084 yards and NFL-leading 16 touchdowns. The 25-year-old running back also added 49 receptions for 474 yards and three TDs to finish the year.

Green Bay Packers’ running back Aaron Jones has no doubts about his future in NFL. If it were up to him, he would be a one-franchise man for the rest of his career. But Jones, who is in the final year of his rookie deal, is still waiting to hear from Packers whether they want to be a one-back franchise in the years to come.

Jones had a breakthrough season in 2019, leading the league in touchdowns with 19 and topping the 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old running back is now motivated to have a similar impact in 2020 with or without a new contract.

“Whether it’s my first year or my last year on a deal, I’m going to be just as motivated,” Jones said on Wednesday. “It doesn’t change just because a contract is on the line for me. I mean, I’m going to continue to work and do everything in my power. “

With that being said, Jones would prefer if he could find common ground with Green Bay and play out his NFL career there. “I trust my agency and the Packers. With that, I would love to be a lifelong Packer. That’s my take on that.”

Packers reportedly have an interest in keeping Jones past 2020, but it is unclear whether they are willing to back up that interest with a big financial commitment. The player’s agent Chris Cabott recently confirmed that he had talks with Green Bay about Jones’ new deal and that the negotiations will continue in the future.

While Aaron Jones established himself as Green Bay Packers’ main back in the past two seasons, his contract extension comes up during a shifting market for RBs in the league. Despite some record-setting deals, the NFL teams are reluctant to give their backs big extensions after a number of them didn’t work out in the past. Also, Packers already acquired a “safety blanket” in case that Jones walks, drafting Boston College’s AJ Dillon with the second-round pick in 2020.

Jones entered the league in 2017 as a fifth-round pick and has since rushed for 2,260 yards and 28 touchdowns. He is also a reliable option in the passing game, catching 84 passes for 702 yards and four TDs.
