Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam tournament that didn’t have its 2020 edition, with the organizers deciding to cancel the tournament due to COVID-19. However, this scenario won’t repeat in 2021.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club, which is responsible for the event, confirmed plans to stage Wimbledon in 2021. According to the official statement, the tournament will take place from June 28 to July 11.

Depending on the health situation next summer, the organizers will decide whether to allow fans to attend in a full or reduced capacity or to play matches in front of empty stands.

“Staging The Championships in 2021 is our number one priority, and we are actively engaged in scenario planning in order to deliver on that priority,” said AELTC chief executive Sally Bolton.

The cancelation of the 2020 edition of Wimbledon was only the second time in history that the tournament wasn’t played. The only other time was the 1945 edition, which was canceled due to World War II.

Unlike Wimbledon, all three other Grand Slams went through with their tournaments. Australian Open was held before the coronavirus pandemic got to an alarming level, while the US Open and French Open postponed their events and played matches without audience while adhering to all health and safety protocols.

The 2020 Wimbledon tennis tournament has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that is causing major disruptions in daily life and in the sporting world throughout the planet.

Instead of opting to postpone the tournament to a later date, tournament organizers decided to just wait until next summer to hold the 134th edition of The Championships.

Wimbledon is one of the four “Grand Slam” events held every year in the tennis world. After the Australian Open went off without a hitch in January of this year, the French Open was postponed until September, and now we know that this year’s Wimbledon simply won’t take place.

The tournament, played on a grass surface, has hosted some of the most memorable duels in the history of the game in its nearly century and a half-long history. Novak Djokovic won the men’s singles event in 2019, while Simona Halep took home the women’s prize.

The 134th edition of this premier tournament was set to take place from June 29th until July 12th at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London. The purse for the tournament’s participants was expected to be $42 million, but will not be given out due to the competition’s cancelation.
