Cincinnati Bengals were the first one the clock when the 2020 NFL Draft officially started on Thursday night, and it’s safe to say that there were no surprises when they announced their pick. Bengals took LSU’s quarterback Joe Burrow first overall and officially kicked off a new era for their franchise.

Burrow joins Bengals after arguably the most impressive season by a college QB in the history of the game. In 2019, he led LSU to a national championship title while winning a Heisman Trophy and completing impressive 76.3% of his passes for 5,671 yards and NCAA record 60 touchdowns.

Burrow is now expected to take over the troubled Cincinnati Bengals franchise and transform it into a winning organization. Bengals have missed the playoffs for the past four years while their last postseason win came three decades ago.

“You’ve led every single team you’ve ever played for to a championship, and that expectation does not change now that you’re a Bengal, and I’m looking forward to going through that process with you,” Bengals’ head coach Zac Taylor told Burrow shortly before the pick will be made official.

Burrow, on the other hand, is just as eager to get on with the work and grind his way to greatness.

“Ready to get to practice,” he responded. “Tired of all the talking. Ready to start working out again.”

The remaining nine picks also didn’t see many surprises, as Washington Redskins took Ohio State’s pass rusher Chase Young with the No.2 pick while his fellow Buckeye, cornerback Jeff Okudah, went third overall to Detroit Lions.

New York Giants made a bit of a head-scratching move when they selected Georgia’s offensive tackle Andrew Thomas with the fourth overall pick. While the Giants needed an OT, Thomas was considered only the third-best prospect at the position.

Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers also got their quarterbacks of the future, selecting Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon’s Justin Herbert, respectively.

Green Bay Packers arguably made the most shocking move in the first round, when they traded up to No.26 in order to draft Utah State’s signal-caller Jordan Love. The Packers were believed to be in a market for an offensive weapon to help their Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but instead, they selected his replacement.

The second round and third round of 2020 NFL Draft kicks off on Friday night while the rest of the rounds will play out over the weekend.

Due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL decided that this year’s draft will take place in a virtual format. This was confirmed by league’s commissioner Roger Goodell in a memo sent to all 32 NFL teams on Monday.

The 2020 NFL Draft was set to take place between April 23rd and April 25th in Las Vegas, but the ongoing health crisis made it unlikely for the event to take place. The league strongly considered postponing the draft, but ended up deciding to take things into the virtual world in order not to affect the season timeline.

According to the memo, the teams and their personnel are advised to do follow the process from their homes and not to gather in team facilities.

“We have reviewed this matter in the past few days with both the competition committee and CEC [a group of league executives], and this will confirm that clubs will conduct their draft operations remotely, with club personnel separately located in their homes,”  Goodell wrote in the memo.

The league decided to close all facilities of NFL teams on March 26th because of the coronavirus, and the teams were told that the decision will stand until the conditions for their reopening are met.

“We will reopen facilities when it is safe to do so based on medical and public health advice and in compliance with government mandates,” Goodell added.

In recent weeks, the teams were forced to get creative when it comes to evaluating the 2020 draft class. This includes extended tape analysis and hosting the players for virtual interviews.

Not all college players are eager to become pros. Clemson Tigers’ star running back Travis Etienne announced on Friday that he won’t enter the 2020 NFL Draft, opting to return to college for his senior year instead.

This news came as a surprise since Etienne was expected to declare for the draft as he is considered one of the premier RBs in the class. He was projected to be the fourth-best back in the draft, with most analysts seeing him as a second-round pick.

“I have long dreamed of competing at the highest level and getting a chance to compete in the NFL. But I’m not done dreaming here at Clemson either, which is why I’m announcing that I’ll be returning to for my senior season,” said Etienne in a statement announcing his return to Clemson.  “I look forward to earning my degree from this great university and continuing to fight with my brothers on the team to make you proud during the 2020 season.”

Travis Etienne staying one more year is definitely welcomed gift for the Tigers, who will now have one of their most impactful players helping them make another run for a national championship in 2020.

Etienne helped Clemson win the title in 2018 with a monster season, and had another big year in 2019. The 20-year-old finished the season with more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage, and he has 1,614 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns alongside 37 catches for 432 receiving yards and four TDs.

Alabama Crimson Tide will have to find a new quarterback next year. Alabama’s current QB Tua Tagovailoa decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

Tagovailoa announced his decision at the press conference on Monday.

“With lots of prayers, thoughts and guidance I have decided that I will enter the 2020 NFL draft,” said Tagovailoa. “It was a hard decision all around.”

Entering 2019, Tagovailoa was considered an almost unanimous first overall pick in 2020. However, his season was cut short due to a hip surgery, which caused his draft stocks to drop. The 21-year-old is now considered to be a top 10 pick, with the possibility of him dropping even more, depending on how teams are afraid of his injury history.

Tua Tagovailoa made a name for himself in 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship, when he stepped in for Jalen Hurts and led the Crimson Tide to a comeback win. He followed that up with an impressive 2018 season, in which he won the Walter Camp Award and Maxwell Award.

Tagovailoa started 2019 on a high note as well but ended up having to undergo ankle surgery in Week 6. He returned after three games, but didn’t manage to stay healthy for too long as he dislocated his hip against Mississippi State.

While there is no doubt that Tagovailoa has the talents to have a successful career in the NFL, it’s unclear how much importance teams will put on his health struggles. This will probably be determined during the NFL Combine when he will be able to show how much the injuries affected him.

“After an amazing three years at Ohio State, it’s time for me to begin the next chapter. I’m excited to finally announce my declaration for the 2020 NFL draft,” Young said in a statement posted on his Instagram account. “I am excited for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Despite arguably being the best player available in the draft, Chase Young isn’t projected to go first overall. Cincinnati Bengals own the No.1 pick, and it is believed that they will take LSU’s quarterback Joe Burrow as a successor for inconsistent Andy Dalton. The more realistic option for Young is to be taken by Washington Redskins, who own the No.2 pick.

If Young ends up in Washington, he would be reunited with QB Dwayne Haskins with whom he shared the locker room at Ohio State. Haskins was drafted 15th overall by Redskins in 2019 NFL Draft.
