The 2020 NBA Draft was finally held on Wednesday night, five months later than it was previously scheduled, and the Minnesota Timberwolves had the top pick and carte blanche to select whatever player they wanted.

They settled on Georgia Bulldogs shooting guard Anthony Edwards, turning into last night’s biggest prize at the virtual event.

Edwards burst onto the scene as one of college basketball’s best young players as a freshman last season before the campaign was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Atlanta native started 32 games for the Bulldogs, lighting up the scoreboard for 19.1 points per game on 40% shooting along with 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.3 steals.

The Timberwolves made the decision to select Edwards over other top prospects such as LaMelo Ball and James Wiseman due to his excellent scoring potential in the pro game. He is expected to be a volume scorer who will add explosiveness to Minnesota’s young core of players.

Ball, long considered to be the favorite to be the top pick in the draft, slid to #3 to the Charlotte Hornets while Wiseman went 2nd overall to the Golden State Warriors.

Expect Edwards to get plenty of playing time in the upcoming season as the Timberwolves look to take small steps towards contention.

According to ESPN, a significant number of NBA teams are making efforts to convince the league to delay the 2020 draft, which is scheduled to take place on June 25th. The teams are reportedly pushing for an August date instead.

There are multiple reasons for why teams are interested in delaying the 2020 NBA Draft. According to current league guidelines during coronavirus pandemic, the organizations can’t have in-person workouts or interviews with draft prospects. The ongoing health crisis also makes medical evaluations of the players a lot more complicated.

Team executives are anticipating that an August draft will give NBA more time to access the situation and potentially make the guidelines less strict. In this case, the organizations would be able to maintain some of the most crucial elements of the NBA Draft process.

It remains unclear, however, whether the league is entertaining this possibility.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently stated that the league won’t make any decisions on the future of 2019/20 season until May. If the season resumes next month, then there is probably a big chance that the NBA follows NFL’s example and sticks with the original date. If that isn’t the case, then delaying the draft will definitely become an option.

The college career of James Wiseman, one of the best-rated prospects in the 2020 class, has come to an end. Wiseman announced on Thursday that he is leaving the University of Memphis’ basketball program in order to focus on the 2020 NBA Draft.

Wiseman played only three games for Memphis, averaging 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks, before withdrawing. The 18-year-old center was midway through serving a 12-game suspension he received back in November.

“I feel blessed for the opportunity to be a Tiger and for having the honor to play with these special group of guys,” Wiseman wrote on Instagram announcing his decision. “I can’t wait to see what all they accomplish this season. The friends and fans of Tiger Nation will always hold a place in my heart.”

When the college basketball season started, James Wiseman was seen as No.1 pick in 2020 NBA Draft by the majority of analysts. Following his suspension, he dropped down to No.3, and could possibly drop even more if the college basketball gets a new breakthrough star. 

In the meantime, Memphis Tigers are also taking a step back. Tigers are currently 9-1, riding a seven-game winning streak, and were considered to be a national title contender with Wiseman. Now, however, that doesn’t seem a likely scenario.
