Major League Baseball announced the schedule for the 2020 MLB season on Monday. The Opening Day will take place on July 23rd with a match between the New York Yankees and the defending World Series champions Washington Nationals.

Besides Yankees and Nationals, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers will also take the field on the same day. All other teams will have their opening games the day after, on July 24th.

Considering the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and decision to play only 60 games in the regular season, MLB had to get creative with the schedule. In order to minimize the health risks and limit the travel, the league decided to have teams play their regional opponents, but that won’t affect the divisions.

In a 60-game setting, a team will play 40 games in their division, while its remaining 20 games will be based on its most proximate regional opponents. The best example are Chicago Cubs, who will play interleague games versus American League Central teams Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, and Minnesota Twins.

MLB hopes to commence the postseason on September 29th and have the Game 1 of World Series on October 20th. The potential Game 7 of the World Series is scheduled on October 28th.

The league previously announced that the All-Star game wouldn’t take place this year due to specific circumstances. Los Angeles Dodgers, who were set to host this year, will instead welcome the game in 2022.

In yet another disappointing stumbling block as Major League Baseball, its owners, and its players attempt to reach a deal to begin the 2020 season, the MLB Players Association has once again rejected the league’s proposal for the currently-suspended season.

The back-and-forth between the players and the league and its owners has still failed to reach a point of agreement, as players feel that the league and its owners are trying to short-change them financially.

The latest proposal from MLB included a 72-game regular-season schedule with 70% pro-rated pay. This, in effect, was no different financially from their previously-rejected offer which included full pay for a schedule around 50 games.

MLB Players Association president Tony Clark said that “our sport deserves the fullest 2020 season possible,” calling both the number of games offered up in the league’s latest proposal as well as its financial offer to players insufficient.

The MLBPA declined to counter-offer the latest proposal from the league, instead asking MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to step in and unilaterally impose a schedule for the 2020 season in order to allow the competition to begin.

It remains unclear what Manfred’s next move will be, but this saga is moving closer and closer towards MLB’s first official work stoppage since the strike-shortened 1994 season.

Major League Baseball and the MLB players’ association continue their talks about the 2020 season resume this week, and it appears that the two sides are getting closer to making a deal.

While it was previously reported the MLB wouldn’t be making new offers to the players for the time being, the league went on and presented another proposal on Monday. According to this new proposal, there would be 76 regular-season games in 2020, while the players would be guaranteed 50 percent of the prorated salaries.

In case that the postseason goes through as planned, the players’ salaries would then be bumped up to 75 percent of the prorated salaries. This would mean that the players would receive 35 percent of the money they were set to make before the coronavirus pandemic.

Under this proposal, the regular season would wrap up on September 27th, while the World Series would end by late October.

MLBPA countered the league’s offer on Tuesday, proposing an 89-game season and full prorated salaries for the players. Also, the proposal includes extended postseason that would see eight teams from both American League and National League making the playoffs in 2020 and 2021.

These terms would secure that players get 55 percent of the full 162-game salary.

Reportedly, the league will decline the MLBPA’s offer but there is optimism in both camps as their terms get closer with each swapped proposal.

It appears that the return of Major League Baseball in 2020 is still a long way from happening. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported on Wednesday that the league rejected the proposal of the MLB Players Association for a 114-game season this year and won’t be making a counter at the moment.

In recent weeks, the players’ union was vocal in its wishes to play as many games as possible this year and proceed without more pay cuts. On the other hand, MLB is pushing for the 82-game season and insist on further salary cuts in order to avoid big financial losses.

MLB reportedly proposes to have the Opening Day on June 30th and wrap up the 2020 regular season by October 31st. The league isn’t interested in having regular season baseball in November due to concerns that a potential “second wave of coronavirus” would interfere with the postseason causing the league to suffer further revenue losses. This schedule would be possible with 82 games, although there are also reports that MLB owners could even propose a 50-game season this year.

Another part of MLB’s proposal is to lower the salaries to $1.2 billion on league level, which would be a significant drop from the projected $4 billion. The league previously contributed $170 million in advances and guarantees in case that the season is canceled.

Players, on the other hand, are pushing towards a longer season as they previously accepted a prorated salary for this year. This means that they will get paid according to the number of games they play in 2020. Reportedly, the union isn’t ready to accept further cuts and is sticking with their proposal that would pay players up to 70% of their salaries and get the salary total to $2.8 million.

The two sides are expected to continue talking about different options, although an agreement doesn’t seem imminent at the moment.

Major League Baseball owners have given their approval to the league’s proposal for the 2020 season according to reports on Monday. This is the first step in a process that could see baseball return by the month of July.

The league’s proposal includes starting the season in early July after a “training” period in June that will take place at team’s home stadiums. As opposed to traditional Spring Training action, only intrasquad scrimmages and training sessions will take place.

The league’s proposal also features an 82-game regular season and an expanded playoff format that will include 14 teams instead of the customary 10 teams.

Teams will only play games against their division rivals and their rivals from the other league that are located in the same geographical region, limiting the need for plane travel.

Other changes in the proposal that will now need to be approved by the MLB Player’s Association before it is pushed forward include a 30-man active roster, a universal designated hitter, and a revenue sharing plan that will split income approximately 50-50 between owners and players.

It’s clear that the 2020 MLB season won’t look anything like any season that has previously taken place, but the owners’ green light to the league’s plan is at least a step in the direction towards the return of the sport.
