Switzerland’s forward Xherdan Shaqiri has made a bit of history with his goal in a 1-1 draw against Scotland at the EURO 2024. Shaqiri, who plays for Chicago Fire FC, became the first active MLS player in history to score at European Championship tournaments.
Shaqiri scored in the 26th minute with a beautiful shot outside the penalty area to tie the score after Scotland took the lead in the 13th minute. With four points from two matches, Switzerland is now almost guaranteed to make it to the next stage of the tournament.
Shaqiri added a few more achievements to his resume with the goal against Scotland. He is now the first player to play in South or North America at the club level and score at the EUROs while also being the only player to score at least one goal in each of the last three European Championships and World Cups.
After a successful career in Europe, which saw him play with powerhouses like Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Liverpool, Xherdan Shaqiri joined Chicago Fire FC in 2022 and became one of the league’s highest-paid players. In his two-and-a-half seasons in MLS, Shaqiri scored 14 goals and dished 18 assists in 69 matches.
On an international level, Shaqiri represented Switzerland in 124 games and scored a total of 32 goals.
