Seattle Storm’s Breanna Stewart, who was named WNBA MVP last year, has ruptured her Achilles tendon and will miss out the entire 2019 WNBA season. Stewart revealed the news via a statement posted on her official Twitter profile.

“First off, I just want to thank you for the tremendous amount of love and support I’ve received over the past few days,” – Stewart wrote. “The situation is still a shock to me. … This year especially has been amazing and filled with lots of success and as we all know there are highs and lows throughout a career.”

Stewart suffered the injury while playing in Europe, where she competed in EuroLeague Final Four championship game with Dynamo Kursk. She was the EuroLeague leading scorer this year averaging 21.0 points per game while adding 7.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

“This is just another obstacle that I will overcome,” – she added. “I’m thankful that I have so many people in my corner to help me every step of the way. I’m feeling every emotion possible at this point but just know that the bounce back will be real and I’ll be back better than ever.”

After winning four straight NCAA champion titles with UConn, Breanna Stewart was drafted first overall in 2016 WNBA Draft by Seattle Storm. She had a great start of her professional career by winning WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2016 and earning an All-Star appearance in 2017.

Stewart’s breakthrough season, however, came in 2018 when she led Storm to No.1 seed in the league and earned WNBA MVP honors in the process. She then helped Seattle clinch their third title and was named WNBA Finals MVP in the process.
