Stipe Miocic Defeats Daniel Cormier to Retain UFC Heavyweight Belt

Stipe Miocic is still your UFC heavyweight champion. Miocic retained his belt after beating Daniel Cormier over the weekend in a highly anticipated conclusion to the trilogy between the two fighters.

Both fighters put up a good fight with neither managing to finish the match with a knockout. Still, Miocic was clearly a better rival, making significantly more damage in each round, and deservedly won by a unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47).

Miocic now has four successful title defenses in this category, which is a record for UFC. He now also managed to equal Randy Couture’s six wins in heavyweight title bouts.

“The only reason I’m happy to cement my legacy is to show my daughter that hard work pays off,” said Miocic after the fight.

For Cormier, on the other hand, the loss against Miocic probably put an end to his MMA career.

“I’m not interested in fighting for anything but titles, and I don’t imagine there‘s going to be a title in the future, so that will be it for me. I’ve had a long run, and that was a pretty good fight,” said Cormier.

Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier first met in 2018 at UFC 226, with Cormier knocking out Miocic to take the UFC Heavyweight Championship belt. The duo met again at UFC 241 a year ago, when Miocic took back his belt via TKO.
