Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry can consider himself lucky after receiving just a $50K fine for throwing his mouthpiece toward the official in the Saturday’s loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. In the final minute of the game, Curry considered he was fouled on a drive, and threw his mouthpiece in frustration, considering he should have got the call. He was ejected from the game alongside his teammate Kevin Durant who argued with the officials. Durant didn’t receive any fine, but Andre Iguodala was fined for “verbally abusing” the official.
“I didn’t even need to watch it,” – said Curry about the incident. “In the grand scheme of things, it’s Game 3, we were playing terrible, I was frustrated because I was fouling and I thought I got fouled on the last play. The reaction was definitely a little over the top.“
After the incident, there were those who considered Curry should receive a suspension since this isn’t the first time he threw his mouthpiece in an NBA game. Curry apologized for his actions and stressed that his intention wasn’t to target the official.
“I think once he saw the mouthpiece flying, he was already throwing me out,” Curry said. “I don’t even know if he knew where it went, let alone where it ended up. I would say I wasn’t trying to hit him with it or put him in danger by any type of stretch of the imagination. Again, it was a dumb thing to do. It was stupid. Learn from it and try to move on and be better.“
Avoiding suspension, Stephen Curry was able to play in Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, which ended with a blowout in favor of the Warriors. The Golden State Warriors are now 2-2, being handed defeats from the Grizzlies and the Houston Rockets in the opening game of the season.
