The Pittsburgh Steelers will give veteran quarterback Russell Wilson an opportunity to get his starting job back. According to Steelers’ wideout George Pickens, Wilson will be the team’s quarterback for the Week 7 matchup against the New York Jets on Sunday.
When asked by reporters about the Steelers’ plans for the quarterback earlier this week, head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t want to say who from Wilson and Justin Fields, who started for the previous six weeks, will be under center for the Jets Game.
However, Pickens also chatted with reporters several minutes later and spilled the beans on Wilson getting the nod.
“Yeah, [we’ve been] getting on the same page after practice, throwing more than usual because this is his first start,” said Pickens when asked about his rap with Wilson.
The Steelers signed Wilson to a one-year deal in the offseason after the veteran was released by the Denver Broncos. The team then traded for Fields, the 11th overall pick in 2021, a few days later.
The Steelers had a training camp competition for starting QB that saw Wilson edge out Fields and become the Week 1 starter. But before managing to take the field, Wilson suffered a calf injury that sidelined him for the past six weeks.
In the absence of Wilson, Fields got the opportunity to start and led the franchise to a 4-2 record by completing a career-high 66.3% of his passes and throwing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. However, this didn’t seem to convince Tomlin and the coaching staff, who will now see if the grass is really greener on the other side by giving Wilson a shot.
