The San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama has been unveiled as the recipient of the NBA Rookie of the Year award for the 2023-24 season. Wembanyama received all of the 99 first-place votes, becoming only the sixth ROY in league history.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren came in second, having received 98 second-place votes and one third-place vote for a total of 295 points. Charlotte Hornets’ Brandon Miller, who received the remaining second-place vote, rounded up the Top 3 with 86 points.

“My goals were always to help my team as best as I could and get better as the year went on,” Wembanyama said in a chat with TNT after the news was officially confirmed. “I knew in order to do this, I had to be individually good on the court and dominant. So, it was a huge thing for me and a big thing to get. It’s always been really important, and I’m glad it’s finally official.”

Victor Wembanyama was the Spurs’ first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after being dubbed as the best prospect to enter the league since LeBron James. Despite being met with high expectations, Wembanyama showed that he is as good as advertised, if not better.

Although the Spurs struggled for the majority of the campaign, Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 2023-24. He also immediately established himself as one of the best defenders in the game by putting up a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game.
