Chris Paul’s iconic moniker “CP3” will continue to live on as the veteran point guard embarks on a new journey with the San Antonio Spurs.
Spurs’ forward Keldon Johnson, who wore the No. 3 jersey last season, announced on social media that he is switching to No. 0. This is the number Johnson wore while playing with Austin Spurs in 2019-20.
Johnson’s move will now allow Paul to take his preferred No. 3 jersey with the Spurs for the upcoming season. Johnson himself previously said in interviews that he selected No. 3 in part because Paul is one of the players he admires.
Paul wore the No. 3 jersey during his college days with Wake Forest and continued to do it when he was selected by the Hornets in 2005 with the fourth overall pick. He went on to wear the same jersey number in his other stops, including the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors.
Paul joined the Spurs on a one-year, $11 million deal in the summer after being released by the Warriors. He is expected to provide the franchise with veteran leadership and help phenom Victor Wembanyama take the next step in his career.
