Sporting Kansas City surprised lots of people with the way they played in 2018, managing to end the regular season at the top of the Western Conference. The team is now determined to be even better next year, but that won’t be an easy task since they’ll have to enter 2019 without striker Khiry Shelton.

Shelton, who played a significant part in SKC’s successful regular season run, is out of contract in January and won’t sign an extension with the team. Instead, the 25-year-old will pursue his dream of playing soccer in Europe. The news was confirmed by Kansas City’s head coach Peter Vermes.

He’s had a dream of always playing in Europe,” – Vermes told the KC Star. “From everything I understand, and I’ll let him speak more on it, he has an opportunity, and that’s what he’s going to pursue in the short term.

Khiry Shelton started his career playing for several teams in the lower leagues, building up his profile. He caught the attention of New York City FC, who took him second overall in 2015 MLS SuperDraft. In New York, however, Shelton failed to live up to his potential and was traded in December 2017 to Sporting Kansas City.

With SKC, he found his form and secured a place in the starting lineup for the better part of the season. Shelton played 20 games for Kansas, scoring two goals and providing five assists.
