Argentinian forward Sergio Aguero has reaffirmed his support for FC Barcelona, strongly condemning rumors that he had lost enthusiasm to play for the club after icon Lionel Messi departed the Nou Camp for PSG during the summer transfer window.

Aguero, who signed for Barca on a free transfer this summer, explained to radio station RAC1 on Thursday that even if he knew of Messi’s eventual departure from the club, he would nevertheless have been enthusiastic to sign for the Blaugranes.

“I don’t understand why [me leaving] was spoken about. When I signed, Leo, in reality, hadn’t signed anything still. At no moment was there an exit clause related to Leo, that was invented [by the media],” Aguero explained.

The 33-year-old star also revealed that he agreed to take a pay cut in order to sign for Barcelona. While Aguero was informed that the club had not been performing well financially, he responded by stating that money was not his priority and that playing for Barca was a desire of his.

Currently ruled out of action until October due to a calf injury, Aguero maintains that despite the club’s recent setbacks, Barca will still be a force to be reckoned with this season.

While Aguero admitted that Barca are not favorites for the Champions League, he did insist that other clubs will need to show respect to the La Liga giants as it would be a mistake to underestimate them.
