Former WTA world number one Serena Williams suffered a minor injury setback during her fourth-round US Open clash with Croatian Petra Martic. The injury came after Williams rolled her right ankle during the fifth game of the second set, however, the former US Open Champion pushed through the pain to secure a 6-3 6-4 victory.
While the extent of the injury has not been confirmed, Williams seems confident that it will not impact her performance too much as she proceeds to her quarterfinal matchup with 18th seed Wang Qiang.
Williams said of her injury: “I usually know if it’s horrible early on. I mean, I had a really bad ankle sprain in January. I was like, instantly, ‘No, this can’t happen. I’m finally healthy,’ But I’ll see tomorrow. So far I’m good. I have been managing it. We’ll see tomorrow.”
While Williams’ career was put on hold due since the birth of her daughter in 2017, she has slowly but steadily staged her return to the WTA Tennis scene and is now ranked 8th in the singles’ rankings. So far this tournament, Williams has only dropped one set throughout her four previous matches.
