While Seattle Seahawks are getting ready to welcome the rookies they selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, the team is also saying goodbye to a couple of starters. According to ESPN, Seahawks are cutting center Justin Britt and guard D.J. Fluker.

While coming unexpectedly, these two moves are not surprising as they may seem. Both Britt and Fluker were facing tough competition in their respective positions. At the same time, Seahawks were also motivated financially as the release of the duo saved them around $12 million in cap space.

Britt is coming off a serious knee injury which cost him the entire 2019 season and Seahawks are not sure whether he’ll be the same player again. However, the decision was mostly influenced by the fact that the 28-year-old was scheduled to have a cap hit of more than $11 million in 2020.

Britt’s place in the offensive line will probably be filled by B.J. Finney. Seattle picked up Finney in the free agency, signing him on a team-friendly two-year, $8 million deal.

Fluker’s roster spot seemed safe for the better part of the offseason, but that changed once Seahawks spent the third-round pick on LSU’s guard Damien Lewis. The team made several other offensive line moves in the draft, paving the way for his exit.

Fulker confirmed the news about his departure via social media on Sunday.
