The Philadelphia Flyers played almost two years without a true captain on the ice, but not anymore. The franchise announced that veteran center Sean Couturier will serve as the Flyers’ permanent captain moving forward.

Couturier is the 20th captain in Flyers’ history and first since Claude Giroux, who left the team in March 2022. Center Scott Laughton and forward Travis Konecny will serve as alternate captains.

Couturier is viewed as a fitting choice for captain and represents a long-term solution for the Flyers. Aside from spending his entire career with the franchise, he is also only in his second year of an eight-year extension.

“Sean Couturier is an ideal choice to be the next leader of the Philadelphia Flyers,” said general manager Daniel Briere said in a statement. “Sean was drafted here and has made Philadelphia his home. I have personally seen his development from a responsible forward to one of the best two-way centerman in the game and a playoff performer.”

Couturier has 11 goals and 22 assists for a total of 33 points in 50 games this season. He is part of the reason why the Flyers are having a successful season and seem bound for playoffs, sitting third in the Metropolitan Division with a 29-19-6 record.

During his time with the Flyers, Couturier received the Bobby Clarke Trophy, given to the team’s most valuable player, three times.
