Andy Green’s time in San Diego has come to an end. San Diego Padres announced over the weekend that they have fired Green as their manager, with bench coach Rod Barajas taking over as the team on an interim basis.

This move comes after Padres fell to 70-86 record, which is enough for the fourth place in NL West. The 2019 MLB season is also San Diego’s ninth consecutive without a winning record and fourth straight such season under Green.

“I want to thank Andy for his tireless work and dedication to the Padres over the last four seasons,” – said Padres’ general manager A.J. Preller in the statement. “This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one we felt was necessary at this time to take our organization to the next level and expedite the process of bringing a championship to San Diego. Our search for a new manager will begin immediately.”

After several years of rebuilding, 2019 seemed like the year when Padres would finally be a competitive team in MLB. They put together a competitive team, which was highlighted by the free agency pickup Manny Machado, who inked a $300 million deal in the offseason.

Things started to go well for San Diego, and by the time All-Star break came, they were 45-45. Things went downhill from there as the team reverted to their losing ways. The fact that they had a talented team that still couldn’t get the job done was ultimately what decided Green’s faith.

“We have more talent and a better ball club than the way we are playing. We are trying to build toward something. Big picture-wise, we think we are in a good place.” – Preller added.
