The Sacramento Kings made a surprising decision to fire head coach Mike Brown. The move came after a close 113-114 loss to the Detroit Pistons that pushed the Kings’ losing skid to five games.
The Kings entered the 2024-25 season with high hopes. They acquired All-Star DeMar DeRozan in the summer and believed pairing him with star duo De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis would allow the team to emerge as a contender in the Western Conference.
Instead, the Kings mostly struggled at the start of the season and currently sit 12th in the standings with a 13-18 record. While it appeared that the players didn’t lose faith in Brown, the front office decided it had run out of patience and opted for a change.
The Kings will embark on a search for a new head coach right away with assistant Doug Christie leading the team on an interim basis.
Mike Brown became the head coach of the Kings ahead of the 2022-23 season and made an immediate impact. He guided the team to a No. 1 seed in the West, marking the franchise’s first postseason appearance after 16 seasons. Brown also earned Coach of the Year honors, becoming the first head coach in the history of the league to receive this award with a unanimous vote.
However, things didn’t go well for the Kings since then. They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs and then missed the postseason in 2023–24.
Brown, who just received a three-year extension in June, leaves the Kings with a 107-88 record.
