Ruud van Nistelrooy didn’t wait too long to get another opportunity after a successful interim head coach stint with Manchester United. According to influential soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, van Nistelrooy is set to take over as the manager of struggling Premier League side Leicester City.
Romano reports that the two sides have come to an agreement and are currently working through the paperwork. The official confirmation of van Nistelrooy’s appointment is set to take place in the coming days.
Van Nistelrooy started the season as an assistant for Manchester United’s head coach Erik ten Hag. After ten Hag was dismissed in October, van Nistelrooy took over on an interim basis and guided the club to three wins and a draw in four matches. He then departed the club following the arrival of Ruben Amorim as a new permanent head coach.
After a legendary career as a striker, which involved stints with United and Real Madrid, Ruud van Nistelrooy started his coaching career with PSV Eindhoven in 2013. He served in various roles with the Eredivisie side before being appointed the first team manager in 2022. Van Nistelrooy would go on to spend just one season on the PSV’s bench but still managed to lead the club to the KNVB Cup trophy.
Leicester City has been looking for a new head coach after firing Steve Cooper following a disastrous start to the 2024-25 season. After 12 games, Leicester is 16th in the Premier League standings with just one point above the relegation zone.
