It looks like Rudy Gay’s time with the San Antonio Spurs has come to an end after just one season. According to ESPN‘s Chris Haynes, Gay will decline his 2018-19 player option and become a free agent this summer. If he had opted to stay with the Spurs, the 31-year-old would make $8.8 million next season.

Rudy Gay signed a two-year, $17 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs in July 2017, after he was forced to miss a better part of the 2016-17 season due to left Achilles tendon rupture. Gay didn’t have a glowing time with the Spurs, struggling with a heel injury and posting the lowest numbers since his rookie year. He played in 57 games, mostly coming off the bench, and averaged 11.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.

San Antonio Spurs also await for shooting guard Danny Green to make his decision on his $10 million, 2018-19 player option.

Rudy Gay was taken with the eighth overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by Houston Rockets and then traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on the draft night. Gay had a stellar rookie season, finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting and being named to NBA All-Rookie First Team. Although he established himself as one of the franchise’s most valuable players during the six and half years he spent in Memphis, the Grizzlies decided to trade him to Toronto Raptors in January 2013. He also played for the Sacramento Kings before joining the Spurs.
