Rookie center Matt Poitras is set to remain with the Boston Bruins. The team had until Tuesday to decide whether or not to return him to the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm.

“He’s sticking around. He just belongs,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery explained, adding that it didn’t take long to make a decision on Poitras’ future.

Having played nine NHL games for the Bruins this season, Poitras’ entry-level contract has now been kicked in. Still, Montgomery wanted that the 19-year-old rookie may not remain with the NHL team all season, but that he has impressed the coaching staff enough to stay on with the Bruins in the meantime.

A second-round draft pick in 2022, Poitras scored three goals and five points total in his nine appearances this season. He has provided much-needed depth in the center following the retirement of veteran Patrice Bergeron and the departure of David Krejci.
