New England Revolution’s Carles Gil has capped off an impressive campaign in 2019 regular MLS season in a big fashion. The league announced on Wednesday that the Spanish midfielder is the recipient of this year’s MLS Newcomer of the Year Award.

Gil joined Revolution in February from the Segunda Division side Deportivo de La Coruna and immediately made his mark on the team. He played all 34 regular-season games while helping New England get their first postseason appearance since 2015. The 26-year-old also captained the team for the better part of the season and managed to score 10 goals while adding 14 assists.

En route to winning MLS Newcomer of the Year Award, Gil received 19.56 percent of all votes cast by players, clubs, and media. New York City FC’s Héber was second with 17.55 percent while Toronto FC’s Alejandro Pozuelo came in third with 12.01 percent.

Speaking for Revolution’s official website following the announcement, Gil said that he felt welcomed in New England and that this made him adapt to MLS and be successful right away.

“When I came here, they made me feel like an important part of the team,” – said Gil. “That was followed by them giving me the captain’s armband. Like any other player, when you’re given that confidence when you’re given that trust to play well, I attribute that to how well I adapted.”

Carles Gil started his professional career with Valencia, but only played eight matches with the team between 2012 and 2015. In 2015, he signed with Premier League side Aston Villa, but didn’t play much in England as well, spending significant time on loan with Deportivo La Coruna.

La Coruna signed Gil on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2018/19 season, and he played 18 games before joining Revolution in a record transfer of $2 million.
