Washington Redskins have decided to have a roster shake-up just one day before the players are scheduled to enter the training camp. The team announced on Tuesday that they have parted ways with veteran linebacker Mason Foster.
By cutting Foster, who was the team’s leading tackler in 2018 with 131, Redskins saved $4 million and now have $12 million in cap space.
Redskins considered cutting Foster prior to the start of the free agency but ended up keeping him as insurance in case of injuries. After some of the younger guys stepped up during recent workouts, Washington felt confident that they can now lose the 30-year-old without losing quality on the defensive side of the ball.
The timing of the move, however, didn’t sit well with Foster’s agent Blake Baratz, who accused the Redskins of not operating in “good faith.”
Mason Foster spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, before signing with Washington Redskins in 2015. Foster’s performances in Washington varied, with 2018 being his best year with the organization. Besides contributing 131 tackles, he also had 1.0 sacks, two interceptions and four passes defended.
Foster’s career stats include 661 tackles, 8.5 sacks, eight interceptions, six fumble recoveries, and two defensive touchdowns.
