Red Wings Sign Goalie Jimmy Howard to a One-Year Extension

In days leading to NHL trade deadline, it looked like Detroit Red Wings are willing to deal their All-Star goalie Jimmy Howard. Now, however, the team decided to double down on Howard and have signed the 34-year-old to a one-year extension.

Howard is currently in the final season of his six-year, $31.75 million contract. The extension, which will keep him in Detroit through 2019-20 NHL season, will play him a base salary of $4 with an additional $1.1 million available in playoff bonuses.

“It’s an honor,” – said Howard after inking the deal. “Very special to be able to prolong my career here in Detroit.”

Howard is currently 19-20-5 this season and boosts 3.05 goals-against average, and .908 save percentage. His career stats include a 221-151-63 record with 2.49 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

“He’s given us real consistent, good goaltending, I believe,” – said Wings coach Jeff Blashill. “Real, real happy for him. Obviously, the work that he put in, he’s a great example for a lot of the guys in the room of going to work when things are down. He didn’t say ‘Woe is me.’ He didn’t complain, he looked in the mirror and said ‘I have to be better.’ And he got better.”

Detroit Red Wings took Jimmy Howard in the second round of 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He went on to play 461 NHL career games with the team, which ranks him third on the franchise’s all-time list among goalies. Howard managed to get three NHL All-Star selections during his time in the league.
