The Boston Red Sox announced on Saturday that they are shutting down All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers for the remainder of the 2024 season.
According to Red Sox, Devers is dealing with a shoulder inflammation and is being placed on a 10-day Injured List. The team called up infielder Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester to take his spot on the roster.
Shoulder issues have plagued Devers throughout the entire 2024 campaign. He injured his right shoulder during spring training and then suffered a left shoulder injury shortly after the All-Star break. While he played through the pain and didn’t spend any time on IL until now, the Red Sox rested him at various points.
During the first part of the season, Devers kept producing at a high level and earned his third career All-Star nod. However, the ailing shoulders have begun taking a toll, as he batted .167 while managing just one home run in the past month. He was struck out 29 times during that period.
“We’re disappointed, because he is basically our offense,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters on Saturday. “He’s the guy. And just the last month has been hard to watch.”
Devers finishes the 2024 season with a .272 batting average, 28 home runs, 83 RBIs, and 34 doubles.
