Veteran running back David Johnson reportedly agreed to rework his contract with the Houston Texans. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Johnson will earn $6 million in 2021 according to the deal while receiving $4.25 million in guaranteed money.

Johnson, who has one year left on his contract, was originally set to receive $9 million this season. But only $2.3 million out of this figure was guaranteed, putting the 29-year-old veteran in danger of being cut.

Considering an uncertain free agency market, it made sense for Johnson to accept different terms. He got more guaranteed money while keeping his job and receiving an opportunity to be an impact player.

The Texans, on the other hand, still got salary-cap relief while retaining a player that was solid for them in 2020.

David Johnson landed in Houston last year, being part of the trade that sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. Although he missed four games due to COVID-19 and concussion issues, Johnson still led the Texans in rushing with 691 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 33 receptions for 314 yards and two scores.

Johnson, who has a Pro Bowl selection and All-Pro nod from 2016, is expected to be the Texans’ first choice in the backfield in 2021. He doesn’t face a lot of competition for the spot, especially since Duke Johnson got cut last week.
