Baltimore Ravens wide receiver corps has been depleted by injuries ahead of the upcoming key matchup against division rivals Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite this, the franchise opted to cut ties with disgruntled wideout Diontae Johnson.
The Ravens announced on Friday that Johnson has been waived, bringing his ill-fated stint with the team to an end after just seven weeks.
Looking to add experience and depth to the WR position, the Ravens sent a fifth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers for Johnson in late October. At the time, Johnson was the Panthers’ leading wideout with 30 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns.
However, Johnson never managed to get off during his time in Baltimore. In four games, he only managed one catch for six yards. The frustration about the lack of his involvement in the team’s passing game led him to refuse to enter the 24-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, resulting in a one-game suspension.
Despite a disastrous stint with the Ravens, Johnson will likely draw interest from several contenders who are looking to boost their roster ahead of the playoffs.
Baltimore, on the other side, remains worryingly thin in the wide receiver position. Veteran Nelson Agholor is dealing with a concussion and has already been ruled out for the Steelers game, while 2021’s first-round pick Rashod Bateman is questionable due to a foot injury.
The Ravens are currently second in AFC North with 9-5 record while the Steelers are sitting at the top of the division at 10-4.
