Manchester United will start the makeover of their underachieving roster by moving on from defender Raphael Varane. The 31-year-old France international will depart the club following the expiration of his contract in the summer.

Varane confirmed the news in a video posted on social media.

“To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it has been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt,” the defender said in a post on social media. “I’ll see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye for the last game of the season, and it’s going to be very emotional.”

Raphael Varane joined Manchester United in 2021 from La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid. Varane emerged as a key player in his first two seasons at the club but the 2023-24 campaign was quite challenging for him. He was frequently out of form while also dealing with a number of injuries.

United held a club option to extend Varane’s contract for the 2023-24 season but declined to pick it up. Aside from his lackluster form, the club likely saw an opportunity to slash their wage bill. Varane is reportedly earning £250,000 per week.

Varane is expected to be one of many players to leave Manchester United in the summer. The club had a disappointing season that sees them currently sitting at No. 8 in the Premier League standings and facing a real danger of failing to qualify for European competitions.
