The Los Angeles Rams’ running back Sony Michel is calling it quits. Michel made a decision to retire from professional football, walking away at the age of 28.

The news was confirmed by the Rams’ head coach Sean McWay, who said that Michel informed him about his decision over the weekend.

“His body is feeling like it’s talking to him,” McVay told reporters. “I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the competitor that he is.”

“What an incredible player, what a great career this guy has had,” McVay added.

Sony Michel started his NFL career as the first-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2018. He spent three years with the Pats, helping the franchise win a Super Bowl in his rookie year.

Michel left New England in 2021 to join the Rams and ended up being part of another Super Bowl-winning team in Los Angeles. He played with the LA Chargers in 2022 before re-joining Rams on a one-year deal back in June.

Over the course of his five seasons in the NFL, Michel rushed for 3,243 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding 56 catches for 439 receiving yards. The Georgia product also had 475 rushing yards and six rushing TDs in the playoffs.
