The Las Vegas Raiders have been handed a tough blow this week, learning that their standout defensive end Malcolm Koonce will be forced to sit out the entire 2024 NFL season.
Koonce initially landed on Injured Reserve after hurting his knee during practice ahead of the Raiders’ Week 1 clash against the Los Angeles Chargers. It was initially believed he would return at some point during the season, but further tests showed the injury was much more serious than originally thought.
According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, Koonce is now scheduled to undergo knee surgery next week. The procedure is reportedly seen as the best option for the player’s long-term health.
With Koonce down, the Raiders are losing one of their best contributors on defense from last season. He delivered a stellar campaign that saw him play all 17 games and make 11 starts while collecting 8.0 sacks alongside 43 tackles, 17 QB hits, and three forced fumbles.
It is also a misfortunate turn of events for Koonce. He is currently in the last year of his contract and was looking to have another strong year and secure a big payday in free agency. Now, he will have to do that in 2025, either with the Raiders or some other team willing to take a chance on him.
