Las Vegas Raiders struggled at linebacker last season and made it a priority to improve on the position this offseason. A part of the process, the team decided to first make some room on their roster, which is why LB Tahir Whitehead is no longer with the franchise.

Raiders announced on Monday that they have released Whitehead, bringing the 29-year-old’s time with the team to an end after two seasons. The news was also confirmed on the team’s official social media.

Whitehead joined the Raiders in 2018, signing a three-year, $19 million contract. He started all 32 games in the past two years and was a solid contributor for the team racking up 234 tackles, one interception, six passes defended, and one forced fumble.

However, that wasn’t enough for the Raiders to keep him around, as they would prefer to invest the money into another player. The team will free up to $6.25 million with Whitehead’s release.

Given Tahir Whitehead’s solid showings since he came into the league in 2012, there is no doubt that there will be plenty of suitors for his services. Whitehead will also benefit from an early start of free agency, as he will be able to test it one week earlier than other free agents.

Whitehead’s career numbers include 600 tackles, 3.0 sacks, five interceptions, and three forced fumbles.
