The Process continues. Philadelphia 76ers have announced that they have agreed on a 5-year extension with their center Joel Embiid. Although the financial terms of the contract have not been made public, according to ESPN the deal is worth $148 million which represents the designated rookie scale maximum contract extension. Embiid could earn $30 million more if certain conditions are met. In order to get the additional money, he would have to earn All-NBA first-, second- or third-team selection, or be named MVP in this season.

Although Joel Embiid is one of the most talented young NBA players, many people see this deal as a big gamble for the 76ers. He was selected in 2014 NBA Draft with the 3rd overall pick but spent two seasons without playing a single NBA game due to issues with the right foot. In the 2016-17 season, Embiid played 31 game for the 76ers, before being ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a torn meniscus in the left knee. He was named NBA All-Rookie First Team and averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.5 blocks per game.
When Embiid was on the floor, he showed he is a special player worth every penny of this new deal. If he manages to stay healthy, there is no doubt that he is positioned for great things. But, if injuries continue to plague his career the way they did so far, 76ers just wasted a lot of money.
