The Pittsburgh Penguins’ star center Sidney Crosby is currently set to enter the 2024-25 NHL season on an expiring contract. But he doesn’t believe this will be the case once the Penguins play their season opener on October 9th against the New York Rangers.

Crosby is currently in the final year of a 12-year, $104.4 million contract he signed back in 2012 and will earn $8.7 million in base salary this upcoming season. He has been extension-eligible since the beginning of July, but the negotiations between the two sides have surprisingly dragged out.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Crosby said he isn’t worried and that he expects the process to wrap up fairly quickly.

“I’m pretty optimistic it’s going to get done,” Crosby said. “I don’t know what day specifically, but it’s been really positive. It hasn’t been a difficult process at all.”

Besides being a Penguins legend after leading the franchise to three Stanley Cups, Crosby also showed last season that he can still produce at a high level.

Playing in all 82 games of the regular season, Crosby had 42 goals and 52 assists for a total of 94 points. It was his highest points total since he had 100 during the 2018–19 campaign.
