The New Orleans Pelicans’ star Zion Williamson received a one-game suspension after being late for a team flight. Reportedly, Williamson didn’t arrive on time for the Pelicans’ flight to Philadelphia, where the team was set to play the 76ers.
The Pelicans confirmed the suspension but didn’t disclose the details, instead saying it was “a violation of team policies.”
When asked about it, Pelicans head coach, Willie Green, said the suspension wasn’t a result of a single incident.
“There were several occasions that led up to this, and that’s how we got to this decision,” Green told reporters.
Williamson’s absence didn’t hurt New Orleans, as they managed to pull off a 123-115 win over the 76ers. The 2019 first-overall pick is expected to return to the Pelicans’ lineup for Sunday’s game against the Boston Celtics.
Williamson, who was previously late for practices on several occasions according to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, took responsibility for his actions.
“I take full responsibility for this suspension,” Williamson said in a statement. “I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to [Pelicans owner] Mrs. [Gayle] Benson and my teammates and coaches and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”
Williamson only recently returned to the court after being sidelined for two months due to a hamstring injury. He played 28 minutes in New Orleans’ 97-104 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, scoring 22 points and adding six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block.
