2022 French Open runner-up Coco Gauff was eliminated from the Miami Open on Saturday, losing 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-2 to Anastasia Potapova in the third round.
After going 5-3 up in the second set, Gauff appeared to be in the driver’s seat as she began serving for victory. The 19-year-old admitted, however, that she began to play too defensively, thereby allowing Potapova the platform she needed to launch her comeback.
“That’s kind of been where I’ve been messing up in all my matches this year. All the ones I’ve lost I think I lost because of that,” Gauff commented after the game.
While the sixth seed may be out of the running, her doubles partner and women’s singles third seed Jessica Pegula progressed to the quarterfinals after sweeping fellow American Danielle Collins 6-1, 7-6 (0). In the doubles competition, Pegula and Gauff’s championship hopes remain alive after the pair defeated Czech sisters Brenda and Linda Fruhvirtová 6-3 4-6 10-4 in the round of 32.
Canadian Bianca Andreescu is set to play her round of 32 game against Sofia Kenin on Sunday. The 2019 US Open winner defeated the 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu 6-3 3-6 6-2 in the round of 128 before defeating Greece’s Maria Sakkari 7-5 3-6 4-5 in the round of 64.
