Sources close to the club have confirmed that Newcastle United has added Paulo Fonseca to their shortlist of potential candidates for the role of manager. This news comes as club part-owners Amanda Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi deliberate their next move after completing the Saudi-backed £305 million takeover of the Premier League club last week.

Despite the ongoing search, the club confirmed on Friday the current manager Steve Bruce will remain in his position as the Magpies take on Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park on Sunday. This will mark Bruce’s 1,000th match of his managerial career.

Multiple sources have claimed that, despite this update, the club is expected to dismiss Bruce within the next week, paying him around £8m in compensation.

Fonseca, who managed Roma last season, is currently without a club after being dismissed by the Serie A club. Prior to coaching Roma, Fonseca spent three seasons with Shakhtar Donetsk, with whom he won the Ukrainian Premier League in each of his seasons in charge. He also spent a season with FC Porto, winning the Portuguese Super Cup, as well as a season with S.C. Braga, with whom he lifted the 2015-16 Taça de Portugal trophy.
